SDKManager install on AGX Xavier without Ubuntu host computer

I am having trouble with installing the new Jetpack 4.5.1 on the AGX because as per install instructions I am required to use sdkManager.

As I don’t have access to an Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04, or CentOS host computer in order to install the sdkManager i have already used a virtual desktop with Ubuntu 20.04 and CentOS 8.0.2 and was able to install the sdkManager itself but was then told that there are no available releases and also was unable to locate the AGX.

I have also attempted to upgrade the existing pre-flashed Jetpack which is currently 4.3-b134. I first did sudo apt update commands and sudo apt upgrade commands. These avenues as found through the Nvidia developer forums eventually would lead normally to a directory or file error, or command not found error.

I then attempted to install the separate files themselves one by one such as only installing Pytorch, Tensorflow, and Jupyter Labs. I kept encountering similar errors but amongst these I was also finding many version differences and thought that maybe these forum solutions were out of date or only compatible with the newer version of Jetpack.

I was wondering if there is another way to flash Jetpack upgrade/install files to the AGX. I am trying to overcome this step in order to complete the “Hello AI World” course to earn the Jetson AI Specialist Certification. Headless or VNC options would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

VMs are not supported, but they can be made to work. Is it possible for you to use a VM with Ubuntu 18.04? I know you said you don’t have this, but I figure if you have a 20.04 VM, perhaps you could switch to 18.04. After that you’d need to make sure the recovery mode Jetson’s USB is always passed to the VM (the Jetson will repeated disconnect and reconnect during a flash…often what starts out connected in a VM does not reconnect correctly without the user setting it up).

On the virtual machine i did a download of the 16.04 VM and it wouldnt allow me to install the SDKmanager .deb file. I ran into a libconfig error and various other document location errors i approached this with apt install and dpkg -i and using the given file location from file manager.

I was unable to even open the SDKManager to see if the USB connectivity was the error (which im thinking it wasnt)

Is there no way to flash things onto the AGX without a host computer? i simple do not have the ability to get an ubuntu host computer if not via VM

Try an Ubuntu 18.04 VM.

As background, realize that most desktop PCs have a BIOS. That BIOS does a lot of work to bring up rail power, clocks, so on, and to then produce a uniform API for the bootloader to work with. Embedded devices do not have this, and so when you flash you are basically installing a software-based BIOS on top of everything else. That BIOS is very custom to each embedded device, and does not include the ability to boot to a CDROM or USB thumb drive unless you’ve modified it to do so. Even if you had this, then it would be really difficult for a Jetson to self-flash like a PC with a thumb drive. Instead you get recovery mode, and flash puts a temporary mini operating system in during the flash.

The software which understands recovery mode is binary and runs on a Linux desktop PC architecture only. This is the “driver package”, and the custom USB device the PC sees when a Jetson connects in recovery mode is what the driver package works with. Since the software is binary, this also eliminates being able to flash from non-Linux or non-PC architecture.

Like I said though, if your VM is Ubuntu 18.04, then chances are you can make it work. A typical problem is that during flash the VM will lose the USB device as it disconnects and reconnects, but there are ways to deal with that. One is to set up the VM to always pass that USB device to the VM. Another is sometimes to simply unplug and replug the USB cable when the flash software fails to detect the recovery mode Jetson.

This is the same error message i got on the VM using Ubuntu 16.04 and now i found out the jetson nano is based on Ubuntu 18.04 therefore, i attempted to install the sdkmanager on the jetson nano and use that as my host machine.

Either way since this is the same error message and i have seen it on a few forums but never found the response, i was hoping you could help me figure out how to get over this obstacle.

Tomorrow i will attempt to install the SDKManager on the VM running Ubuntu 18.04 but fear i will once again run into this error.

No Jetson can run flashes. The architecture is wrong, and only a desktop PC architecture can run this. The best you could hope for by forcibly installing an amd64.deb package on a Jetson is to break parts of it. Do try Ubuntu 18.04 on a desktop PC architecture. If USB is lost during flash, then attempt to set up the VM to always pass the Jetson through, or perhaps unplug/replug the USB as a workaround.

the problem im running into which is quite urgent that now the computer doesnt mount snap chromium which is breaking all other downloads within ubuntu 20.04

im really needing the solution to this so i can continue my other projects.

i was in fact able to install and use SDKManager on an ubuntu 16.04 host computer and installed all available resources. But within the OS upgrade I am no longer able to run installs on my AGX with ubuntu 20.04.

Can you try an Ubuntu 18.04 VM?

I figured it out basically a bunch of chromium packages were broken so i cleared the cache

That actually seems to be a somewhat common issue for Ubuntu, so I am not surprised that fixed it. I’ll have to remember to suggest that when I see similar issues.

I am running into trouble when trying to install keras and several other applications.

The error code is this long red message and another yellow warning. I currently dont have the hardware on me but if you are aware of this error and could offer a solution it would really assist me. thank you:)

I have no way to say without a complete log of the error. I don’t know a lot of about keras, but anyone who does would also want a log before commenting on it.

Here is the error log I get when i try to install skimage but this seems to be the same error message i get when trying to install keras as well. I hope that in correcting it once, that it will fix all similar problems.

Command "python setup.py egg_info" failed with error code 1 in /tmp/pip-build-i2v5ywej/h5py/

The other error was on the AGX but a similar error occured on the nano and the OS is ubuntu 18.04

This is the error log when trying to update keras h5py fails therefore i am trying to install h5py first and this is the error. also i was able to install skimage after updating and upgrading python pip and setuptools for anyone on the nano with the same problem.

P.S. I have done setuptools upgrade and update and tried it with pip3 install h5py as well. When i search this error all in find is the upgrade setuptools solution.
