Multiple people on proton github have encountered this issue with NVIDIA cards only.

On my PC with freshly booted game mangohud reports 0gb swap, 6-7 gb of vram and 60-70% GPU usage depending on the stage. However the more I play and load in and out, swap and vram completely fills up , gpu usage goes to 99% making the game fps drop and stutter. This does not happen Windows 10 as VRAM gets cleaned every loading screen.

Things I’ve tried so far:
Nvidia driver 545 and 550
fbdev=1 and =0
both X11 and Wayland
using zswap or zram
using proton experimental bleeding edge
