Ubuntu 18.04 driver fail

nvidia-smi fails with:
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

randr does not recognize external displays.

This looks relevant but I’m not sure what to do with it:
