Ubuntu 18.04 login loop after JDK update

Hello,
I have a Dell Precision T5500 with an NVIDIA G98 [Quadro NVS 420] running Ubuntu 18.04.
I ran into the login loop problem after updating from Java JDK 8 to JDK 11 and rebooting.
I tried workarounds like

  • ``` dpkg-reconfigure lightDM ```
  • ``` chown user:user .Xauthority ```
  • ``` mv .Xauthority .Xauthority.bak ```

etc. I eventually purged NVIDIA drivers using

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

and tried rebooting and logging in, unsuccessfully, before attempting to reinstall drivers.
I tried multiple combinations of purging drivers and reinstalling using

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

and

sudo apt install nvidia-340

(recommended driver),
and also tried using apt-get to fix missing and broken packages.
I ensured that there is no ‘nomodeset’ kernel parameter, and tried running

grep modeset /etc/modprobe.d/* /lib/modprobe.d/*

which returned no result even when using sudo.
I’ve attached a log file created after rebooting the computer and trying to log in once.

Are you running lightdm or gdm as DM? Which DE, Gnome?
Please post the complete output of
sudo apt install --reinstall nvidia-340

I’m running lightDM, which seems to be the only DM installed.
I have Gnome 3.28.4.

Anything seems to be correctly in place and no diversion errors show up on driver reinstall either.
Please check if this is a broken user profile by just creating a new user and loggin in as that.

The same login error occurs for all users. I can still log in from the terminal but cannot otherwise.

Please run
sudo journalctl -b0 --no-pager >journal.txt
and attach the output file.
