Ubuntu 18.04 MX-150 crash on screen resume

I experience a number of problems with this display.

The diagnostic log is attached.

When the screen saver comes on all open applications stay running, but as soon as I then enter the password to resume, the apps all close, the X session closes and I basically have a clean slate.

Occasionally this does not happen, but more often than not it does happen.

Here the link to the log: Dropbox - File Deleted

Since this is an Optimus system, the display is driven by the intel gpu. In dmesg, you’re getting the error

[drm:skl_ddi_pll_enable [i915]] *ERROR* DPLL 1 not locked

I suspect this could lead to the igpu losing the display on turning it off.
Please check if you can reproduce this when switching to intel mode (sudo prime-select intel, reboot) and if upgrading the kernel to 4.17 or 4.18 fixes the issue.

I switched to intel mode and the problem has gone away, so no, I could not replicate it.

Wrt the upgrading of the kernel: I had a newer kernel installed, but it made the machine quite unstable. So I switched back to the mainline kernel.

If this istthe NVidia driver failing, then what is the solution? Simply selecting the Intel display bypasses the problem, but it doesn’t solve it.

I installed kernel 4.18.8 and switch back to NVidia mode, but the systems just hangs after a while. It seems to boot fine, I can log in, but then within a minute or two, the whole system freezes. Only a forced power-off will get it back up.

When this is happening, is the login still avalable at VT7? Use CTRL+Alt+F7 to switch to it.
Does it also happen when you disconnect the external monitor?

When it happens (system freeze), nothing responds any more. Can’t get to a console ctlr-alt-F1 or F7.

More on my original problem: I switched to intel mode and tested it yesterday, but clearly not well enought because I just had a screen blank timeout (set to 5 min this morning) and when I entered my password all my apps crashed again. So, in reference to whether I can reproduce the error with intel mode: yes, I can.

I did some tests now and it doesn’t happen in Intel mode without an external monitor.

Can you check if using another cable fixes the issue?

Are you serious?? This happens at a client where I use an external monitor and on two different monitors at home (a projector and a screen). It is definitely a software bug, but I’m not sure who to turn to for a fix. Is it X that crashes, or the Intel driver or NVidia.

If it’s happening while switched to intel, it is very unlikely to be related to the nvidia driver since that’s not even loaded in that case.
Since this is only happening while any external display is attached, this can also be hardware related, maybe some flakey hdmi connector. Does that notebook have different connectors? Do those have the same issue?
In any case, while the system seems frozen, can you ssh in and create a nvidia-bug-report.log?
