Unable to log in to account after installing nvidia-driver-xxx

I had Nvidia 396.xx, and it was working well. However, I was asked to update the driver, so I followed the process. Purge all nvidia packages, then apt-get install nvidia-driver-xxx.

I tried 440,435,410, 390 . After each of them, when I reboot, I’m unable to log in to account. I enter my password, press enter - it just freezes, the mouse doesn’t move; just hangs. I switch to a console terminal and checked nvidia-smi and lsmod; nvidia-smi shows the correctly installed driver and lsmod shows that nvidia modules have been loaded.

After I purge nvidia*, I’m again able to properly log in.

This is for a GTX 1060 Notebook (Dell).

Is there anyway I can just go back to using 396.xx? I couldn’t find the package.
