Unable to make UART connection between Jetson Orin Nano Dev kit and FC via the FT232RL converter

Hi,

I am trying to interface Jetson Nano Orin Developer Kit with CubePilot Orange cube+ flight controller. I tried connecting the TELEM 2 output of FC to the FT232RL UART to USB converter and then via the C-USB cable, I connected it to my Jetson board. I ran the command “MicroXRCEAgent serial --dev /dev/ttyUSB0 -b 921600” to start the communication between the Jetson and my FC, but I am not able to receive any data. The read rate I recorded was 213B/sec. Though I am able to make the serial connection using the GPIO pins.

Then, to verify if there is no connection issue in my FT232RL converter, I interfaced the FC with my Ubuntu laptop and ran the same command as mentioned above; I was able to see the ROS2 topics.

Can someone from team please help and let me know how to enable UART connection via the FT232RL converter for a boardrate as high as 921600.

Thanks a lot

To address the issue of interfacing the Jetson Nano Orin Developer Kit with the CubePilot Orange Cube flight controller, we need to examine the setup and configuration of the UART connection.

Firstly, the Jetson Nano Orin Developer Kit has a micro USB port and exposes 12 pins from J14 that can be used for board automation and UART debug output. The TOPO integrated board automation solution connects to the host PC via a full-speed USB interface, allowing for communication with the NVIDIA Jetson UART port and automation of commands like power on, power off, reset, and recovery.

In this case, the user is trying to interface the Jetson Nano Orin Developer Kit with the CubePilot Orange Cube flight controller using the TELEM 2 output of the FC connected to the FT232RL UART to USB converter, and then via the CUSB cable connected to the Jetson board.

The user ran the command MicroXRCEAgent serial dev dev/ttyUSB0 b 921600 to start the communication between the Jetson and the FC, but was unable to receive any data, with a read rate of 213B/sec. However, the user was able to make the serial connection using the GPIO pins.

To troubleshoot this issue, we can compare the setup with the successful connection made using the Ubuntu laptop. The key difference is that the Ubuntu laptop was able to establish a connection with the FC using the same command, indicating that the issue may be specific to the Jetson Nano Orin Developer Kit.

One possible solution is to verify the configuration of the UART connection on the Jetson Nano Orin Developer Kit. The user should check the device tree configuration to ensure that the UART port is properly configured and enabled. Additionally, the user should verify that the baud rate is correctly set to 921600.

Another possible solution is to use a different UART to USB converter, such as the FTDI chip, which is integrated into the Jetson AGX Xavier Developer Kit carrier board. This may provide a more reliable connection and allow for higher baud rates.

In summary, the issue of interfacing the Jetson Nano Orin Developer Kit with the CubePilot Orange Cube flight controller may be due to a configuration issue with the UART connection or a limitation of the FT232RL UART to USB converter. Verifying the device tree configuration, checking the baud rate, and using a different UART to USB converter may help to resolve the issue.

Here are some additional steps that the user can take to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Verify the device tree configuration: Check the device tree configuration to ensure that the UART port is properly configured and enabled.
  2. Check the baud rate: Verify that the baud rate is correctly set to 921600.
  3. Use a different UART to USB converter: Try using a different UART to USB converter, such as the FTDI chip, to see if it provides a more reliable connection.
  4. Check the serial connection: Verify that the serial connection is properly established using the GPIO pins.
  5. Consult the documentation: Refer to the documentation for the Jetson Nano Orin Developer Kit and the CubePilot Orange Cube flight controller to ensure that the setup and configuration are correct.

By following these steps, the user should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the issue of interfacing the Jetson Nano Orin Developer Kit with the CubePilot Orange Cube flight controller.

Am I correct that the USB is on the Jetson side? I will add that you can monitor the logs with “dmesg --follow” on the Jetson, and then watch as you plug in the USB device. Show us what log is appended as a result of plugging in the USB.

If this causes the existence of “/dev/ttyUSB0” (this isn’t a real file, it exists in RAM and is the kernel driver creating that file only when the device driver loads), then also show the permissions via:
ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0

There is no update from you for a period, assuming this is not an issue anymore.
Hence, we are closing this topic. If need further support, please open a new one.

Hi tanishporwal2006,

What’s the Jetpack version in use?

Have you confirmed the baud rate is 921600 for your flight controller?

Please share the full dmesg for further check.
