Unable to view memory usage with nvidia-smi, "Not available in WDDM driver model"?

I can’t see how much GPU memory applications when I run nvidia-smi. The memory usage is listed as “N/A” for some reason. FWIW running nvidia-smi -q gives me Used GPU Memory: Not available in WDDM driver model. I’ve seen lots of posts mentioning a similar issue, but no solution or explanation. The strange thing is I can use an application like Process Explorer and find it shows me how much memory applications are using, whether or not it’s accurate is another story. However, it does give me seemingly appropriate GPU memory usage of my applications whilst nvidia-smi doesn’t give me anything.
