David Kirk and I have contributed an article to the November 2010 issue of Communications of the ACM entitled “Understanding Throughout-oriented Architectures.”. It examines the difference between throughput-oriented and latency-oriented architectures, typified by GPUs and CPUs respectively, and why these differences matter.
