USB3 camera not working properly after upgrading to jetpack 5.0.1 from jetpack 5.0.0

Chipset: AGX Orin
Board: AGX Orin Developer kit
Jetpack: 5.0.1
USB3 camera: hikrobotics MV-CE060-10UMC (there are two of them)
Issue: the camera would disconnect when the configuration files were been reloaded with a new exposure value and sometimes the mouse and keyboard would get frozen and not responsive
Description:
While using AGX Orin developer kit with jetpack 5.0.0, there was a system failure and the machine refused to restart after that. Upon power up the machine would have the lights on and the fan spinning for a few seconds and the lights and fan would go out and the machine would return to a shutdown mode. So we had to ask the official post sales team in china for advice and they gave the suggestion of reinstalling jetpack. So we did and the system was able to boot after that with no problem, but apparently 5.0.0 was off shelf due to excess bugs, so we had to install 5.0.1. There were several problems that arose as a result of this upgrade though. The first problem is that the mouse and the keyboard would periodically get disconnected when the two USB cameras were transmitting data. And the second problem was that the camera would disconnect randomly when reloading camera configurations. And a third but more elusive problem is that some times when running pytorch for NN related processes the GPU would be at full capacity when viewed in jtop but the processing speed was much slower than the period before the re-installation of jetpack and the system by 3-4X. But this last problem seemed to have resolved itself after downgrading pytorch to an earlier version. We were suspecting that it could be a hardware problem and asked the post sales team for a hardware inspection, but they refused as they think it might be a system problem. What they also refused was to provide the earlier jetpack version of 5.0.0 to us to verify whether or not the problem was a newer jetpack version issue. They did ask us to post a question on the forum for advice, which is why this post in here. Thanks for reading the question and I’m willing to supply with more information upon request

hello witt_w_wang,

for your question-1 and question-2,
please gather kernel messages for reference, you may setup a terminal and running $ dmesg --follow to keep capturing logs. please have a try to connect/disconnect your USB devices and capture logs for reference,

for your question-3,
I’m not sure jtop works with Orin series on JetPack-5.x, since it’s not maintain by NVIDIA.
please execute tegra_stats utility to gather the usage reports for reference.

Hi Jerry, thanks for responding.
For problem 2 this is what the log that results from $ dmesg --follow looks like.

450-483 is what seems to appear after the USB cameras configurations changed
For problem-1 I cannot get an instance as it is rather arbitrary when it occurs, I will keep this command in mind and ssh onto the machine and get the logs the next time this occurs.
For problem-3 I think this is no longer a problem for us but I greatly appreciate the input and will keep in mind to use tegra_stats next time someting like this happens.

hello witt_w_wang,

are you using a usb hub? may I also know how many device you’re connected to AGX Orin in total?
please also check $ lsusb -t to list device information.

hello Jerry,

There’re 2 cameras(the two purple wires in the back), 1 usb hub(1 mouse and 1 keyboard) currently connected to the developer kit.
And the output of the command lsusb -t:

Thanks for the support

hello witt_w_wang,

please narrow down this, had you test video streaming continuously?
we’ve check locally, both couple of cameras and keyboard/mouse works normally.

may I know what’s your steps to have configuration files reloaded,
do you manually restart the camera service? please share your steps for reference,
thanks

Hi Jerry,
The exact procedure to recreate the problem is to first connect to both cameras from a backend server, then we trigger the start grabbing function through the camera vendors python api and registers a clock triggered function to grab the latest image generated on the camera hardware. And the images gets subsequently passed on to our react electron front end that renders the images as a stream through http streaming request because the backend and the front end are on the same machine. Where the problem would occur is when I stop grabbing on the camera and reload another camera configure file and then restart grabbing. At this point the restart grabbing would fail and the camera would hang. The only solution would be to disconnect the camera and reconnect to it. All of the about are done through the camera vendors SDK with no manual operations including the reconnect and the regrab. This problem is a problem because the reconnect takes much longer than the regrabbing, thus making the stream on the UI unresponsive for a very noticeable amount of time. This was not a problem prior to the reflashing of the system. Hopefully this describes the problem with enough detail for you.
Thanks, Witt

hello witt_w_wang,

may I know what exactly you stop the camera, reload camera configure, and restart capture.
is it done by the user-space application, or, command-line?
please also check kernel side for related failure messages.

hello Jerry,

We control cameras with hikrobot SDK which is a C++ library that has a python connector that we use. We run the server through the command line, and the SDK library is also used through the command line via the server.

And this is the kernel log when the problem occurs

I’m not sure if this is what you wanted, this seems to be the same as the logs we supplied before. If there is anything specific you had in mind, please let me know, thanks.

hello witt_w_wang,

please check you’re able to see devices through lsusb when below message pop-up.
Sep 8 09:54:34 ubuntu kernel: [170381.548840] usb 2-3.3: reset SuperSpeed Gen 1 USB device number 3 using tegra-xusb

BTW,
had you write udev rule to handle this specific device?

please check you’re able to see devices through lsusb when below message pop-up.

hello Jerry

I’ve tried the command lsusb and lsusb -t many times while reloading camera configuration.
But there seems to be no changes when the problem occurs, and the following is the udev rule.

baiyi@ubuntu:~$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/80-drivers-HikSDK-2bdf.rules
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ATTRS{idVendor}=="2bdf", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"

Thanks.

hello witt_w_wang,

please narrow down the issue.
instead of using customer’s SDK. you may enable usb camera with gst pipeline directly,
for example, $ gst-launch-1.0 -v v4l2src device=/dev/video1 ! video/x-raw,framerate=30/1,width=640,height=480 ! xvimagesink

hello,

We tried to use gstreamer on the camera but it doesn’t seem like it is able to connect to this industrial camera, maybe because the vendor was not using Genicam or any common usb camera apis. And even if the connection were to work, there doesn’t seem to be any point in looking for a problem that was not there in the first place as the only reproducible problem so far has been a problem with the switching of the camera configurations leading to camera freeze. There has not been any point where we had a streaming problem with this camera without configurations. I’m not sure if this can be reliably reproduced in a different software as the process of grabbing photos might be dramatically different depending on the API been used.
So we have been coordinating your inquiries about the state of the issue and the potential causes thus far. And as far as I can tell there doesn’t seem to be any apparent problems regarding the image capture and the camera configuring process from a kernel or system perspective. I can understand that it is a difficult problem to nail down as there seems to be complications that arise from a third party SDK. My expectation from the start has been that maybe there was a networking problem, which doesn’t seem to be the case. So as an easy way to narrow down this issue, I propose that you provide the previous version of jetpack 5.0.0 so that I can definitively make sure that there isn’t any bug in our code or the vendor’s SDK, since the only reason why we believe this is an issue instead of a missing feature of some sort is because camera configuration swapping was working previously on a 5.0.0 machine. If there’s no way that you can supply us with a 5.0.0 jetpack and you think there’s absolutely no way that this could be an hardware issue then I see no further possibilities of resolving this issue through this trail of back and forth conversation.

hello witt_w_wang,

what’s the exactly steps for switching of the camera configurations.
can you repo the same failure without change camera configurations?

hello Jerry,

This is the steps code(Python) for switching of the camera configurations.

# ch:创建相机实例 | en:Creat Camera Object
	cam = MvCamera()

	# ch:选择设备并创建句柄 | en:Select device and create handle
	stDeviceList = cast(deviceList.pDeviceInfo[int(nConnectionNum)], POINTER(MV_CC_DEVICE_INFO)).contents

	ret = cam.MV_CC_CreateHandle(stDeviceList)
	if ret != 0:
		print ("create handle fail! ret[0x%x]" % ret)
		sys.exit()

	# ch:打开设备 | en:Open device
	ret = cam.MV_CC_OpenDevice(MV_ACCESS_Exclusive, 0)
	if ret != 0:
		print ("open device fail! ret[0x%x]" % ret)
		sys.exit()

	print ("start export the camera properties to the file")
	print ("wait......")

	#ch:将相机属性导出到文件中 | en:Export the camera properties to the file
	ret = cam.MV_CC_FeatureSave("FeatureFile.ini")
	if MV_OK != ret:
		print ("save feature fail! ret [0x%x]" % ret)
	print ("finish export the camera properties to the file")

	print ("start import the camera properties from the file")
	print ("wait......")

	#ch:从文件中导入相机属性 | en:Import the camera properties from the file
	ret = cam.MV_CC_FeatureLoad("FeatureFile.ini")
	if MV_OK != ret:
		print ("load feature fail! ret [0x%x]" % ret)
	print ("finish import the camera properties from the file")

	# ch:关闭设备 | Close device
	ret = cam.MV_CC_CloseDevice()
	if ret != 0:
		print ("close deivce fail! ret[0x%x]" % ret)
		sys.exit()

	# ch:销毁句柄 | Destroy handle
	ret = cam.MV_CC_DestroyHandle()
	if ret != 0:
		print ("destroy handle fail! ret[0x%x]" % ret)
		sys.exit()

As for reproducing the same failure without changing camera configurations, it works fine except reloading configuration file currently

hello witt_w_wang,

it looks restart the camera device for reloading camera configuration file, you should expect camera device connect/disconnect during the process.

That’s interesting that this is the conclusion that you have reach at the end of this discussion. After us repeatedly explaining that this was not the behavior in 5.0.0 and is a new thing that only started happening in 5.0.1. Not completely sure if there’s anything we could have done to clarify it even more. The reason why the above code looks like it’s suppose to disconnect and reconnect the camera is because we showed the entire code for from camera startup to shutdown, and if you happened to read the comments then you can see that only the cam.MV_CC_FeatureLoad("FeatureFile.ini") line is loading the camera configs, which doesn’t involve any kind of disconnection. And you seem to have completely ignored our request for the older version of jetpack which is the only way we can be sure that this is a system/hardware problem instead of a programming/SDK problem. And I have reasons to believe that at this point we have reach the same spot as we previously had with the chinese post sales team where the support from NVIDIA is trying to switch the blame to third party vendors and pretend like there’s not a problem. Not sure if this is just the way NVIDIA works nowadays or did I just happen to run into very bad support. There hasn’t been any coherent problem solving logic, the questions been asked seem like they were just the result of asking around different engineers. And even towards the end there’s no educated guess about what could be the reason for this problem, aside from saying that it’s just not a problem of course. Not sure if giving us a previous version of the jetpack would be a very difficult thing nor would it be a confidential thing, as we were literally using that version not so long ago, and if it was not because a sudden system blackout and NVIDIA post sales team “recommending us” to reinstall jetpack, we would actually be still using 5.0.0 and be completely fine. I hope the NVIDIA support team can take a lesson from this case and make for a better customer post sale experience than just messing up the clients system and saying that there’s no problem to begin with afterwards.

we cannot repo this locally, please share the simplest command-line to let us repo this on developer kit.
