Using 4GB Jetson Nano with 2GB Carrier Board

Hi,

We attempted to connect a 4GB Jetson Nano to a 2GB carrier board which should work according to this post [1]. The 4GB Jetson Nano is using the latest version of the firmware “jetson-nano-jp45-sd-card-image.zip” which I downloaded from [2].

The problem we found that once the OS boots, none of the USB ports seem to work. This means we cannot use any USB devices such as a mouse or keyboard. Observationally the laser beneath the optical mouse does not turn on so it appears like there is no power going to the USB.

I can confirm that the 2GB carrier board itself is working properly because if we use a 2GB Nano on the same carrier board, everything works just fine.

Similarly the 4GB nano is also fine if tested with a 4GB carrier board.

The issue only arises if the 4GB nano is connected to the 2GB carrier board.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Hi benky58un,

What’s the purpose to use 2GB carrier board?
Do you have other carrier board to try with?
You Jetson Nano 4GB module is production module? or?

Hi @kayccc,

What’s the purpose to use 2GB carrier board?

We are trying with the 2GB carrier board as a contingency if nvidia stops making available the 4GB development kit.

Do you have other carrier board to try with?

We have tried this with 2 different 2GB carrier boards. Same result.

You Jetson Nano 4GB module is production module? or?

The 4GB module came from a 4GB Jetson Nano Development Kit.

Hi benky58un,

If you are using below combination:
Nano-4GB devkit + Nano-2GB module + JP-4.5 nano sd image.
Please use Nano-2GB JP-4.5 SD image and try usb function again.
Thanks!

Hi @carolyuu,

I will try your suggestion tomorrow.

It looks like the SD Image that I should use should match the carrier board instead of the Nano Module. This seems counter-intuitive to me. What image should I use if I used a third-party carrier board?

Regards

Hi benky58un,

The image is what module you used.
The Nano-2GB module, please use Nano-2GB image.
The same, Nano-4GB module, please use Nano-4GB image.
If you used the third-party carrier board, please connect vender. Thanks!

Hi @carolyuu,

In that case this is what we did.

2GB Carrier Board + 4GB Nano Module + 4GB SD Image = No USB

Hi benky58un,

OK, we will try that and let you know result.
The no usb issue only reproduce on JP-4.5? could you also try JP-4.4.1?
Thanks!

Hi @carolyuu,

Thank you for your help.

We have tried JP-4.5 as linked above and also an older SD card running

$ cat /etc/nv_tegra_release
# R32 (release), REVISION: 4.3, GCID: 21589087, BOARD: t210ref, EABI: aarch64, DATE: Fri Jun 26 04:38:25 UTC 2020

I can try JP-4.4.1 tomorrow.

Regards

It looks like similar to my case.
I tried Jetson Nano module(emmc) to 2gb dev kit’s carrier board. But after flashing os by SDK manager, I found USB does not work.
I tried 3 OSs(Nano module, Dev kit, 2Gb dev kit) and still can’t use USB.

Hello,

Is this an issue specific to jetpack4.5 or even jetpack4.4.1 has this issue?
Could you try it on your device too?

Hi @WayneWWW and @carolyuu,

We tried with Jetpack 4.4.1 today. Same issue I am afraid. No USB.

2GB Carrier Board + 4GB Nano Module + 4GB SD Imag JP 4.5 = No USB
2GB Carrier Board + 4GB Nano Module + 4GB SD Image JP 4.4.1 = No USB

Regards
Ben

Hi benky58un,

We will investigate this issue and update to you.

Hello,
This usecase (nano 4gb on 2gb board) is not supported. USB is not working because of the incompatible device tree.
