VDPAU issues on Fedora 30

I’ve recently purchased a “Shadow Tech” pc, since while my GPU is relatively strong, I am currently held back massively by my outdated FX series processor when trying to run the latest games, not to mention EAC doesn’t play well with WINE/proton.

Unfortunately, I’ve had to result to software-decoded steam remote play, because I can’t for the life of me get hardware decoding to actually work.

The Shadow client for linux uses Hardware decoding exclusively, which should be facilitated by VDPAU, as is Hardware Decoding on the Steam Client’s Remote Play feature.

However, when using the Shadow Client, or the Steam Remote Play hardware decoding feature, I’m greeted with either a still-frame image of the desktop of the shadow, or simply a black screen that never changes.

I can connect to the PC via Parsec to verify that the PC itself is functioning correctly during this time, but the VDPAU enabled stream is frozen entierly.

The really odd thing is, parsec itself is using VDPAU and libva, and working fine, but nothing else using libva/VDPAU works at all.

For the record: I’m using driver version 430.26 from the nvidia website, libva/libva-vdpau-driver from the F30 repo.

libva v. 2.4.1-1
libva-vdpau-driver v. 0.7.4-24
kernel 5.1.12-300

Now that’s mixing up a lot of things and is hard to understand. Please post the output of
vdpauinfo
and
vainfo
on your local system. Furthermore, please run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root and attach the resulting .gz file to your post. Hovering the mouse over an existing post of yours will reveal a paperclip icon.

To check if this is a regression, please try a v418 driver on your local pc.

Not really sure where the difficulty in understanding comes from.
When using VDPAU hardware decoding on video streams, it doesn’t work, except for with parsec for some reason.

nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (112 KB)

Tried with 418.74 as well as a re-installation of the 430.26 drivers, behavior was the same.

Please check if it works with this va-vdpau wrapper instead of the standard one:
https://gitlab.com/aar642/libva-vdpau-driver

It doesn’t work with the standard shadow client, but it did work with the shadow beta client for me. (contrary to the fact the gitlab says it specifically doesn’t work with the beta client)
