When (and by which software component) A/B rootfs boot retry count is decremented?

Recently I’m tried to experiment with initrd in rootfs A/B redundancy mode. initrd image that was tested turned out to be faulty, but to my great surprise A/B mechanism didn’t roll that back after a few reboots. After booting in RCM boot I found that despite of slot B having status “Boot failed” and numerous reboots, retry count is still stuck at “3”, so no rollback happened.

Which software component is responsibe for decrementing retry count?

the retry counts wont decrease if booting failed.
as for the rollback protection, it prevents a computing system from being downgraded (rolled back) from a later version to an earlier version. please check Jetson AGX Xavier Series Fuse Programming Application Note for several ODM Field Fuses to define this. the public documentation about rollback protection will be release with next JetPack release, (i.e. l4t-r32.7).

No, it’s not about rollback prevention, it’s about the feature that is documented - in case of failed update system should reboot into healthy slot after few retries.

That isn’t happening, so the question is - which software component is responsible for maintaining retry count in slot metadata. It should be CBoot, but anyway.

It’s for rootfs (not for bootloader), so retry count is 3.

Reproduction sequence:

  1. Flash jetpack with rootfs A/B enabled, unified A/B disabled.
  2. Boot on the A slot, dump slots info with nvbootctrl:
    Current rootfs slot: A

    Retry count: 3
    Slot 0 update status: Boot succeeded.
    Slot 0 update mode: Normal.
    Slot 1 update status: Boot succeeded.

  6. Reboot the system few more times, dump the slot info.

Result: retry count is not decremented, any reboots boot into slot B. If slot B has an invalid/corrupted/errorneous version of the software, device will not recover by itself.

ahh… you’re talking about RootFS A/B. that’s right, the default value of Rootfs_Retry_Count is 3.
the flow is… get the current slot from RootFS_select, it only check and boot from next slot when retry count < 0.
the valid setting for Rootfs_Retry_Count is 1 to 3. you may configure the settings for confirmation.

Yes, but it’s already configured as 3, which seems to be valid. It’s simply doesn’t decrement across reboots and stays at 3.

It may be caused by wrong usage. Personally I’m wondering what does Slot X update mode: Normal mean. There are no options/switches in nvbootctrl that will even mention the update mode. Maybe that update mode affects something.

the logic is… if the retry_count reaches 0, then the cboot will select another rootfs slot.

it’s cboot to decrease retry count of the current slot.
when the device boot into the rootfs, there will run a background service, nv_update_verifier.service.

in this update verifier service, it will trigger the l4t-rootfs-validation-config.service, this validation service provides an interface to users to customize when to say the boot is successful.
for example, /usr/sbin/user_rootfs_validation.sh, this script does not exist by default.
if the validation script doesn’t exist, or, returns true, that means the rootfs boot-up successful.

so,
in your case, you should not use nvbootctrl to mark the rootfs slot as unbootable, you should use the l4t-rootfs-validation-config.sh to handle it instead.

unfortunately, it seems we missed this info in the public user guide. we will review the documentation to update it.

The main issue here is that I want to bypass NV OTA scripts for a number of reasons, with the main reason being the need to have rootfs 4x larger than actual data: you must have A/B partition that 2x smaller than flash chip, and you can fit 2x less data in each partition because you’ll have to fit OTA image (which will be as large as rootfs itself) when updating.

The same applies to marking slot as good, I need to run rather custom application health checks, so nv-update-verifier is rather redundant here, there already will be a background service.

I can write a software to handle that, but I need a documentation either on low-level API to trigger slot switches or on format of SMD partition on that part (current documentation lists only bootloader structures and does not mention rootfs-related data).

the rootfs image in OTA package is compressed. the update process takes the decompressed image through pipe.


you’re able to have any customizations, you’re also able to provide your own verifier to override NV default verifier.
we don’t have public documentation for the rootfs data in SMD; SMD update for slot status change should always go through nvbootctrl utility;
please execute nvbootctrl to switch to the active slots. i.e. $ nvbootctrl -t rootfs set-active-boot-slot <slot>.

Well, the compression ratio for gzip on filesystems is usually something like 2:1, so this is still a lot. The software that I’m writing will simply pipe the archive from socket into unused slot, avoiding any storage costs at all.

This is exactly what I’m trying to do, isn’t it? :) The retry count issue is the only obstactle on that way.

Ok, let’s reformulate the question to be more specific:

  • What does Slot X update status: Normal mean? nvbootctrl does not seem to have a controls for it.
  • Does NV OTA toolkit perform some manipulations on SMD partition that can’t be done via nvbootctrl?

it’s nvbootctrl to switch the rootfs slot. l4t-rootfs-validation-config.service to validate the rootfs, update_engine should always mark it as boot successful if the system is not in the OTA process.
note, there’ll be change include for the next public release.

Rootfs redundancy need the SMD partition, you may execute nv_smd_generator to generate the new SMD image.

The main issue (which is mentioned in subject) remains: retry count does not decrement and system does not recover from failed update.

the contradiction here is…
you should not have nvbootctrl to mark slots as good, instead, you should need validation script to say the boot is successful. i.e. return: success=0; failed=1. it’ll return success by default since this user rootfs validation script doesn’t exist.

this is a potential bug, we’re working on fixes and doc update regrading to this.
