Periodically resume to black screen using kernel 6.10.4 with nvidia driver 555.58.02-15 on GTX 970

Hi, I am unable to reliably resume from suspend (S3) when using the Nvidia driver version 555.58.02-15. If I suspend the system into S3 and wake it immediately after it will wake successfully and I will be able to use graphical applications.

However, if I leave the system idle in S3 for a long time (usually over an hour), then the system will consistently fail to resume correctly, and resume to a black screen. The monitors illuminate as though there should be output from the GPU, but nothing is on screen. The system is accessible over SSH, but I cannot get output on the monitors (even if I restart X11 with sudo systemctl restart gdm)

System details:
Asus Z170I Pro Gaming Motherboard
Gigabyte GTX 970 Windforce
Arch Linux (kernel 6.10.4-arch2-1)
Nvidia closed source driver (555.58.02-15)
Running with X11 (gdm 46.2-2)

Modesetting is disabled, and I have no applied any special configurations to the kernel module.

What I have tried to resolve the issue:

  • Enabling preservation of all video memory after suspend (and modesettting), as described here: NVIDIA/Tips and tricks - ArchWiki. This seemed to cause errors to appear in the kernel log while suspending the system, rather than while waking it (which I can attempt to gather if desired) Regardless, it did not resolve the issue.

I’ve attached kernel logs from just after waking from suspend that seem like they may point to the problem, as well as the output of sudo nvidia-bug-report.sh --safe-mode --extra-system-data, as running without any options resulted in the script hanging. Please let me know if there is any additional information I should provide or tests I should run

I am also seeing the same issue on my new thinkpad P1 Gen7. It has an Intel Core Ultra 7 165H and a RTX 4070 Laptop GPU.

I am using Fedora with KDE PLASMA version 6.1.5 and KDE Framework 6.6.0 and Qt V 6.7.2
I am on Kernel 6.10.10-200.fc40.x86_64 (64-bit) running Wayland.

I have installed the nvidia drivers following Howto/NVIDIA - RPM Fusion including the “Optimus” section.

Similar to Daniel above the issue seems to occur only have sleeping for a long duration. If i just put the laptop to sleep then re-awake immediately this issue will not occur.
