[580.65.06] GTK 4 apps hang when attempting to exit/close

As I and many others have reported, 580 release feedback & discussion - #21 by agarplayerarlon the 580.65.06 beta driver has a regression where GTK 4 apps hang when you click the “x” button to close them, people have reported it happens with the vulkan backend, but for me on KDE Plasma 6.4.3, which still uses the OpenGL backend by default, I have the exact same hang.

So this issue happens both on the Vulkan backend, and on the OpenGL backend, and I’ve only tested on Wayland.

my personal thoughts:
This is a very important issue to fix, as it makes GTK4 apps unusable basically, especially if you use the GNOME desktop where most apps are GTK4.
I think you should release a second 580 beta driver with at least this issue fixed, I think this is a high priority issue.

to add more information that I’ve just discovered, flatseal (which is a GTK4 app) doesn’t hang and closes correctly weirdly enough, but all the other GTK 4 applications I have installed, Mission Center, Warehouse, Mousam, Gear Lever, Proton Plus, they all hang when trying to close/exit

Thanks for reporting this. As you noted on the main thread, this is being tracked by internal bug #5436037.

This was already ack’d, reproduced, and an internal bug filed by nVidia:

Can you please try setting GSK_RENDERER=ngl in the environment and see if that works around the problem?

GL renderer is unaffected. This issue is specific to the default GTK4 Vulkan backend renderer.

Hello,

I’m encountering this issue as well on Debian 13 on KDE with the 580.76.05 driver, and GSK_RENDERER=ngl does fix the issue. I tested this using the Bazaar flatpak app, but the behavior is the same for other GTK apps.

Let me know if you need any more information! Hopefully I get a reply email, but I’ll probably check in every now and then.

Can you please give 580.82.07 a try? It was released this morning.

From the release notes:

  • Fixed a bugregression introduced in 580.65.06 that could cause Vulkan applications to hang on Wayland.

I can confirm with 580.82.07 GTK4 apps are no longer hanging on exit with the default Vulkan rendering backend.

  • nVidia internal tracking Bug #5436037

@agarplayerarlon , please test and mark this thread as SOLVED.
