@kode54 I don’t use Steam at all: I use vanilla wine-devel (well, almost vanilla: the patched one with ntsync support enabled), but I’ve made a similar mistake: I forgot I run wine in a container, so I didn’t upgrade drivers there ;-]
It all works now: many thanks for pointing me in the right direction!! :)
Well, at least it was userspace, so you didn’t need to reboot to apply the update.
My display still shows a black flicker on the top half every once in a while when watching videos, what bug are you talking about?
590.44.01 regressed the previously (mostly) working Monster Hunter Wilds benchmark. I can gather logs if necessary.
Replying to my own report here: Yeah, verified, this issue was already present in 580.105.08.
It’s been reported by two people me and thrim above with logs using the full game which is way beyond the benchmark now.
If more logs are needed as thrim and i can send the logs on monday
Sorry, I thought I actually read the thread, I guess I haven’t been paying enough attention. :[
Hey, the more logs, the merrier right I just wanna get the game fixed. I think it’s been four driver versions already and still no leeway. And I guess they’re doing other things in the background, but it would be nice just to have a small update.
I was able to install 590 under Arch 6.17 kernel. However, the package was several hundred MB smaller, which made me suspicious. According to this: https://github.com/CachyOS/CachyOS-PKGBUILDS/pull/1008 , there still seems to be quite a bit of work to be done.
Nvidia removed Maxwell/Pascal support. Even the open source driver is full of removals mentioning them.
But, no i’m referring to this:

MD5 checking is skipped yet it errors out. I’ve never seen this when manually specifying driver versions before.
Flickering.
Yeah, nvidia-all has no trouble with 590.44.01 if it’s added formally to the menu options. Apparently the custom version setting is broken and doesn’t put the SKIP selection into the sources hash array?

build and install was succesful!
The latest I have on the RTX 5080 + Sonnet 850T5 + Rocky Linux 10 + Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 11(TB4) is at 2023 14″ Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 [13th,10C,U] + RTX 5080 @ 32Gbps-TB4 (Sonnet Breakaway Box 850T5) TB5 eGPU – hard lock on CUDA operations (nvidia-smi works at idle) => patch fixed | Thunderbolt Linux eGPU and (gh-979) Thunderbolt 4/5 and USB4 eGPU Support by roger-pmta · Pull Request #981 · NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules · GitHub . Without additional support from NVIDIA and Sonnet, I’m at a loss.

The nvidia-all installation worked successfully for me during testing. However, the nvidia-all package probably still needs to be adjusted because some things in the 590 driver have changed, and the patches and libraries aren’t being applied.
I read somewhere that legacy devices are still supported via the proprietary driver, but apparently only the open-source driver will work in the future. I can’t remember where I read that, I think it was on GitHub.
Please stop posting here nvidia-all issues. This is nothing provided by NVIDIA or equal. Its not an official nvidia installer.
Make issues in the repo of the third party project
If you read the original question, you’d realize I was asking if Nvidia’s driver release was broken.
And driver changes that break third party installs is “feedback”.
True words. I was only interested in post (45), the error has been identified <3 but that doesn’t belong here and I won’t discuss it further.<(_ _)>
My apologies for interrupting everyone’s normal scheduled program of screaming into the void about bugs that (at least some) have existed for years. Lets return to that productive discussion.
Here is a list of issues that still exist in 590 and were reported ATLEAST in 580:
- Random black screens when playing intensive games, sometimes resulting in a partial GPU driver crash. It is sometimes possible to switch to a TTY, but attempting to switch back to a graphical session will crash the driver for good.
- Desktop memory usage is excessively high(over 2GB sometimes).
- A large amount of GPU Memory is unaccounted for in
nvidia-smi/ NVML. - Applications crash when VRAM is full.
- Shared RAM under Linux seems broken. It’s almost like there is an incredibly small amount(256MB) and once that’s gone things start crashing.
- DLSS3 / DLSS4 / Smooth Motion is broken. It universally lowers FPS and can cause massive input lag and micro stuttering.
- Gnome-shell / GDM can freeze on login from a fresh boot. Switching to a TTY and relogging in works around this.
- Ray Tracing is broken on a lot of games, resulting in an XID 109 or some other error.
- Some games show DLSS upscaling options but no frame generation(Portal 2: RTX). Maybe a Proton issue?
- Dragging the HDR slider under Gnome can cause a driver crash(maybe fixed?).
- DX12 games have a massive performance penalty.
- VRR causes backlight strobing/flickering
- Shader cache doesn’t save properly, forcing it to be computing again.
- Flickering in Resident Evil 4 - reported by @arthursamuelcoombes
Am I missing some?
Edit: ok, so I lied. Just going to throw it out there that if you are using nvidia-all and want to switch back to Arch’s package, you need to do:
sudo pacman -S lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia nvidia-open-dkms nvidia-settings nvidia-utils opencl-nvidia egl-wayland
(change nvidia-open-dkms to the closed source if wanted/needed)
Make sure to check if you have any “tkg” driver packages left over, but for me this was everything.
