Compatibility of Nvidia Tesla P100 PCIe GPU with Dell R720 PowerEdge Rack Server

As the title states I’m trying to figure out if the Nvidia Tesla P100 PCIe GPU is compatible with the Dell R720 PowerEdge Rack Server - is there a list of compatible GPUs or some PCIe standard on the GPU (or server) I should be looking for?

I need to know too.
thanks a lot

Hi there @wwilly77 and @jr_1 and welcome to the NVIDIA developer forums!

Looking at the original documentation for the Dell R720, page 22, I would suggest verifying either with Dell support or your service provider where you want to install that GPU.

In theory the platform should support the GPU if there is an up to date BIOS installed. But there are some constraints that might make it difficult.

  • The Server has a restriction of 300W for add-in GPUs. The P100 has a TDP of 250W, meaning you can add at most one GPU.
  • You can only install a GPU with the help of Riser cards. That means you MUST check if the P100, which is a dual slot, full-length card, fits in the case
  • The original R720 platform only supports up to 6GB of VRAM due to PCIe bus restrictions. More GPU memory will have an influence on other devices requiring PCIe bandwidth. The P100 has 12 or 16GB

In summary I would caution against this and rather check with your Server service provider what other options you might have.

I hope that helps!

Thanks a lot, this was very helpful!
