mpi launching job in a cluster

In a cluster, can I only be able to compile and launch job in the master node, or I can launch the job on either the master or slave?

For now, when I try to run the job from a slave, it seems to run locally only. When I try to run the job form the master, it can run across machines.

My another question is that when I run mpiexec, I sometimes get the message “Alarm clock”, and no expected output is printed out. I don’t know why.

Hi Tuan,

Are you using MPI-2? If so, then you need to have the mpd running which I assume in your case is only running on the master node.

As for the “Alarm Clock”, I’m not sure. Sounds like something timed out.

Yes, I’m using MPICH2. So, I guess I’m only be able to launch MPI application from the master node only.
