This is very early stages stuff, but NVIDIA reached out to the Chromium devs to see how NVIDIA could contribute Vulkan Video support to Chrome to improve the experience on Linux:
The Vulkan Video TSG and NVIDIA would like to collaborate on enabling Vulkan Video support in Chrome. To help us align on the technical path forward, I have a few questions:
- Is the Codec 2.0 API the most appropriate integration point for a Vulkan Video–based implementation?
- What would the expected process be for contributing such a solution? Specifically, what are the requirements for the port/driver, and is there a conformance or CTS-style mechanism available to validate the integration?
- In the meantime, could you provide guidance on the issues preventing Chrome from enabling the nvidia-vaapi-driver by default? We would be glad to assist with fixes or improvements.
Exciting stuff, even though it’s super early and will take a while to become reality.
If you want to show your interest in this, you can star the issue on Chromium’s tracker. Maybe it will help the Chromium devs prioritize collaboration on this: [Feature Request] Support Vulkan Video Decode extensions
