Orin NX 16GB USB 3.2 Port - Sharing USB 2.0 and USB 3.2 Lines

Hi,

I am currently working with the Orin NX 16GB System-on-Module (SOM) and have a question regarding its USB connectivity, specifically concerning the USB 3.2 ports.

It appears the Orin NX SOM provides 3- USB 2.0 D+/D- lines and separate 3-USB 3.2 SuperSpeed (SS) lines. One USB 2.0 D+/D- pairs and one of the USB 3.2 SS pairs is required to connect to a single USB 3.2 Port A.

Our proposed connection scheme is as follows:

  1. Connect a single USB 2.0 D+/D- pair from the Orin NX SOM to a USB 2.0 hub’s input.
  2. From one of the USB 2.0 hub’s output D+/D- lines, connect it to the USB 3.2 Port A.
  3. Simultaneously, connect one of the USB 3.2 SS lines from the Orin NX SOM to the same USB 3.2 Port A.

We have some doubts about whether this configuration will function correctly. Specifically, we are unsure if it is permissible or electrically sound to route a USB 2.0 signal through a hub and then combine it with a direct USB 3.2 SS signal into a single USB 3.2 Port A on our custom carrier board. If it can be done, what are the software changes need to make in the kenel.

for you information we have attached the block diagram below.

Could you please advise if the described connection method is viable and will work as intended for achieving a functional USB 3.2 port with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.2 capabilities?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

This one won’t work. You could not use a usb2 signal from a hub for another usb3 port.
