PLEASE, share your experience. GPU passthrough using 5000 series

Mine has been an absolute nightmare with a 5060TI and proxmox. (I tried kernel 6.8 all the way to 6.14 even self compiled ones.)

VM will not show tianocore bios no matter what I do, the best I manage is to get image when the driver loads inside the guest VM.
Patched vbios or not when using the usual procedures, max I get is a black screen when I try to use a vbios romfile or simply no vbios at all (For comparison the 4060TI works flawlessly, no vbios, nothing, it just works).

Nvidia driver has to be installed in proxmox so card is initialized. Traditional method of binding vfio-pci etc etc does not work for me.

With rombar unticked, pci-express HAS to be ticked to get image when driver loads inside the VM.
My guest VMs are only linux.

My main problem is when I shutdown the VM. Most of the times it crashes the host.

I’m using the 575 beta driver (5060 ti), I have to.

Please share your experiences, fixes and tricks!
Thank you

I also recently bought 5060ti 16GB with similar configuration under proxmox and couldn’t make it work with Linux VM (but could work on Windows VM so I had hope) until very recently.
My current configuration:

  • Proxmox VE 8.4.1
  • Linux Kernel 6.14.5-1-bpo12-pve (2025-05-21T15:55Z) (opt-in)
  • VM Linux Ubuntu 25.04
  • VM Nvidia drivers open kernel metapackage from nvidia-driver-570-open

Please note I have two cards and the Ubuntu Driver Update only picked the second card RTX3060, you would probably have to force install package manually rather than through GUI.
Also, I removed the option iommu=intel from q35 machine or it wouldn’t boot the VM.

Feel free to ask any question for help if you need so.

Thank you for your time but I forgot this thread. It was a nvidia firmware problem and we have a fix available.
Please have a look at this link.
