Random Xid 61 and Xorg lock-up

I have been using below configuration since couple of weeks but not hit with Xid 61 error.

Asus X570 + Arch Linux (kernel version 5.4.13) + Nvidia drivers available from pacman (440.11) on an xfce desktop

Will keep running system for few more weeks and keep an eye on it.

I am running into this bug for some time now. It is very elusive . I am on KDE Neon (ubuntu lts 18.04).
I tried every last kernel that was available in ubuntu recently and all versions of drivers availble. With HWE and without.
Currently:

Now and again. Intervals vary a lot. It can be weeks can be days. Last one was today.

Some observations (not consistent). I too noticed two times that chrome is using 100% of one cpu core around the dime of the crash. System was more stable when I shut down chrome and spotify overnight.

Usually I have chrome open with tabs from facebook and youtube (nothing playing idle tab main site) and linux spotify client open.

I have one more anecdotal observation.I noticed that my chrome is slowing down. For example when I right click on the bookmark bar context menu appears with big delay. However it was not the case with firefox (in there it was instant). I restarted chrome but it did not help. However after I restarted spotify client. It made the chrome more responsive immediately (no need to restart chrome to take effect). I know it is not 100% and just a hint but if the bug is so hard to track maybe it will help.

Hi All,

I have been using Asus X570 since 3 weeks but no luck with XID errors.
There are few other people who are using same system, would be great to know BIOS versions which is having issue.
I will upgrade to the same version and retry for repro again.

Also, most of the users are using below applications more often, any other application you think might be causing issue, please let us know.

I’ve had it happen with just VirtualBox and another time with just Firefox.

How many screens are you running?

I have only had it with 2 monitors connected. I have seen some jankiness with two monitors like one if them suspends for no reason that could be related.

My system has also been surprisingly stable lately, with 14 days uptime and no Xid errors. I’m using BIOS 1201 for my ASUS Pro WS X570-ACE, which I believe has AGESA 1.0.0.4.

Come to think of it, 14 days ago is suspiciously close to when I closed the Trimps tab from my browser. It’s a browser game which causes pretty constant graphics acitivity when on the foreground. I don’t remember for sure, but I might have also started getting the errors when I first opened Trimps on this setup (after being on a break for a while).

So amrits, maybe try opening https://trimps.github.io in Opera and see if that produces Xids. You can import this save to get to a part of the game where things aare happening: https://pastebin.com/sn5Lucge

Possibly some other page with constant animation and text updates will also trigger it.

Out of that list, I am using chrome. When the Xid 8 happens chrome almost always has a segfault show up in dmesg in the gpu process as well.

Also using chrome, I suspect its hardware acceleration related.

I had this problem quite often while using the 435 drivers. After upgrading to 440, it went away for about a week, but I had it again today while playing Minecraft. Mouse kept working, display was extremely sluggish. After killing Minecraft, display response was a bit better, but not much.

As seen by the screenshot excerpt on https://i.imgur.com/2EW1FON.png, nvidia-smi had trouble getting information from the card after the crash, and irq/75-nvidia was running near 99% cpu. Sorry I wasn’t able to copy/paste because the system was too unresponsive.

I had this issue happen again today… I left my PC for a while, came back and it was in this unusable state. I was able to run the nvidia-bug-report.sh script while it was in this strange state. The output of that script I have here for you to look at:

Updates since my last post: At 19 days of uptime I had the Xid appear while reading webcomics. I was able to recover using the hibernation trick. Then six days later I had another Xid when I had just finished playing FFXIV and went to check the forums. This time it was a complete freeze, which in my experience is not recoverable. I’m currently waiting for amrits to take a look at the machine via ssh.
