Unable to use nvidia-smi or nvidia-settings with a GeForce 520M on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

I am unable to use netiher nvidia-smi nor nvidia-settings:

~$ nvidia-smi
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.
~$ nvidia-settings

ERROR: NVIDIA driver is not loaded

ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system

** Message: 13:08:27.205: PRIME: is it supported? no

I have tried installing multiple versions of the nvidia-driver (340, 390, 430, 440, 450, 455, 460, 465, 470), both from the official packages and from the grapühics-drivers ppa. with all versions the problem was the same, only 340 and 390 made my screen stay black when the login screen should appear.
