Multi-Instance GPU (MIG) has been available for enterprise customers since May 2020.
Four years later, in 2024, the RTX 4090 is currently the most expensive NVIDIA card targeting individual consumers.
However, despite its high cost, the RTX 4090 does not support MIG. My question is not about the technical reasons behind disabling MIG on the software/firmware level for the RTX 4090.
My question is:
Why does NVIDIA not allow individual consumers to have the opportunity to experience MIG technology?
MIG is crucial not only in the enterprise context of serving streams of requests. MIG is also crucial for individual consumers, for example, to try the smallest Multi-agent LLM systems.
NVIDIA, maybe it is time to close the “single-task MS-DOS era” of GPU compute for individual consumers and let them proceed to the multi-task era?
NVIDIA, is the decision to restrict access to MIG technology for individual consumers a matter of strategic choice?
