I created an additional thread here (sorry, I didn’t identify this one as the same problem):
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1033811/linux/linux-driver-390-works-396-doesn-t/
In short:
same problem on Palit GTX 1060 6GB
independent of the screen (tried two brands/models)
independent of the connection (tried HDMI, DP, DVI)
independent of the OS/kernel (tried Ubuntu 16.04 [kernel 4.13], and a fresh 18.04 [kernel 4.15])
works perfectly fine with 390.48
does not work with 396.24 (the "corrupt" screen on a Philips, a black screen on a Dell)
I’ll attach the nvidia-bug-report.log
(Note: it seems to contain both information from the 390 and the 396 boots).
nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (88.4 KB)
Not warcraft99, but maybe this helps, too (see my post above).
Find attached a nvidia-bug-report.log from the moment the screen is corrupt (Imgur: The magic of the Internet ) with the 396.24 driver, triggered via remote SSH.
If I can help otherwise, please let me know.

I can confirm that I have the same issue with my PNY GTX 1060 (6GB) on driver 396.24. Unfortunately I’m unable to provide a bug report because installing the driver makes my system unusable, and I don’t have another system to SSH into the problem system.
I can confirm that the problem exists for both Fedora 28 and Ubutnu 18.04, using pre-packaged versions of the driver and the .run (official Nvidia drivers).
I also have the issue with my GTX 1060 (3GB) model(so it can’t be 6GB specific) and the 396 drivers. The 390 driver works fine currently. As above, I cannot produce a bug report due to it breaking my system and not having another to SSH into it with. OS Ubuntu 18.04
I have recently written another post about it so I am among others who have problems with 396.24 driver.
I can confirm the issue also.
Board: Gainward GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Phoenix
Operating System: Linux 4.16.8-1-ARCH
Driver Version: 396.24

We have fixed this issue and the fix will be available in upcoming driver release …
That is great news - thank you.
Don’t suppose you have a rough ETA of the release?
And will it be in the next 396.x driver ?

That is nice, when you come back from vacation and the troubles have magically been fixed :)
I can confirm driver version 396.18.11 working with my PNY 1060/6GB.
That’s fantastic news! Thanks for the update. Really looking forward to the next release, for now I’ll stick with 390.48.
Thanks very much for the quick response and the fix! That’s not what I’m used to as a Linux user with a rare problem :-)
Is there a rough estimation when a driver including this fix will be available? Are we talking days, weeks, months? Can’t wait to try out DXVK …
Has the fix gone out in the latest 396 release?
https://developer.nvidia.com/vulkan-driver - May 24th, 396.24
I only ask, because I don’t see it listed in the release notes
Thanks,
No, 396.24 is from april and doesn’t contain a fix for that. 396.24.02 just contains vulkan updates, no further fixes.
Is there an ETA of when I can expect a 396.x driver I can with Palit 1060’s ?

Did you actually test with 396.24.02? I would expect the bug to be fixed there.
No, I was deducting this from previous micro releases and info regarding those. So this is fixed in 396.24.02? Nice info, thank you.

Vulkan Beta Driver Version 396.24.02 works just fine on my PNY GTX1060/6G. So yes, the problem discussed in this thread is still fixed ;-)
The R396 is a short live branch. We are not looking for any further R396 releases at this time. We suggest please stay on R390[Long Live Branch] drivers for now. The next LLB and SLB branch will have a fix for this issue.
Hi,
Is there an ETA for the next LLB or SLB which will contain this fix? Effectively being stuck on 390 which isn’t supported by new games(rise of the tomb raider) or things like DXVK.
Thanks,
Alex
