Just wondering if anyone has been able to run the Nvidia beta driver (396.18) with KDE - I need to use it to run the new Tomb raider game…
I have used the ubuntu PPA (OS is KDE neon) and got the 396.18.02 driver, I was previously on the 390.48 driver, which worked (as have all previous versions I have tried over the last 18 odd months of having Neon installed)
When I use 396.18.02 the desktop breaks as soon as X loads, I am unable to see anything expect random squares and lines, sort of like a commodore 64 loading screen, I am unable to go to a TTY also (as it looks the same).
Looking around it looks like it is a sddm issue - in my logs I can see it shows as stopped, and other people using KDE are having similar issues - i.e > AUR (en) - nvidia-beta
Has anyone using a similar card to mine been able to run KDE with 396.18 ?
I have attached a bug report, the desktop is unusable totally, TTY’s are just as bad

That looks rather like a complete hardware incompatibility with the R396 driver, it’s exploding right on driver init. So no sddm/KDE issue imho. Unfortunately, due to the rminit message flood the dmesg output is not very helpful. Maybe just try a later kernel?
I has worked with every driver series I have used since I bought the card 1 year ago (I have always run the latest via PPA (and latest in Arch Linux) - it works fine for example with 390.48 - I can go to single/rescue mode and remove the 396 driver and replace with 390.
BTW when you say is the R390 driver, Do you just mean the nvidia binary driver 390.x series ?
R390=release 390, just any 390.x driver version.
A different thought: This should be a PNY branded card, is that the case? Or did you buy it recently for small money? Does it have a VGA connector? Then it’s a fake, a reflashed Fermi which doesn’t work any more with driver 396.
Unfortunately I am affected by this error too :(
Same card (PNY GTX 1060/6GB). Driver version 396.24 does not fix the problem. I get the same kernel error messages and scrambled screen like shown above.
And I am also affected by the driver issues with the Windows 397.31 driver [1].
I’m running Kubuntu 18.04 with Kernel 4.16.7 atm. But the problem existed with (K)Ubuntu 17.10/kernel 4.13 as well. Luckily I could revert back to 390.48 by booting into “recovery mode” and installing the old driver from the text console. So the problems only start once the X server is started.
Is this issue specific to 1060 6GB PNY and Palit boards? Please attach nvidia bug report who has not attached. We are tracking this issue under Bug 200411026
i have a 1060 gtx from palit on manjaro. After the update to 396.24 the system boots to black screen.
The 390 driver has no problems. The attached bugreport is generated on 4.14 kernel + nvidia 390 driver. (maybe not very usefull)
