Cannot read EDID - RTX 4080 Laptop

Driver unable to read EDID from HDMI under these conditions:

  1. HDMI is functioning properly at 1920x1080.
  2. Turn off HDMI monitor
  3. Desktop turns off display after X minutes.
  4. Turn on HDMI monitor
  5. Press a key to turn back on display and login
  6. Failure because the driver is unable to read the EDID.

To recover I have to alt-f1 to console and then alt-f2 back to the GUI. The resolution is now the default VGA of 1024x768. Once logged back in I have to manually change the resolution back to 1920x1080.
