Failed to flash JetPack 6.1 on Jetson Orin Nano Custom board

Hello. I am trying to flash the new JetPack 6.1 image on a DSBOARD-ORNX carrier board.
I am following the instructions on this website DSBOARD-ORNX Overview and Connector Definitions but obviously I’m using the BSP for JetPack 6.1 (not mentioned in guide).

I’ve made it to the flashing step and ran this command:

sudo ./tools/kernel_flash/l4t_initrd_flash.sh --external-device nvme0n1p1 -c tools/kernel_flash/flash_l4t_external.xml -p "-c bootloader/generic/cfg/flash_t234_qspi.xml" --showlogs --network usb0 jetson-orin-nano-devkit internal

The board fails to boot up again after pre-flashing setup occures and eventually the program times out waiting for it.

I hooked up a serial reader to the debug pins and got the following as the last output from the board’s debug:

Jetson System firmware version 36.4.0-gcid-37537400 date 2024-09-13T04:02:39+00:
00
ESC to enter Setup.
F11 to enter Boot Manager Menu.
Enter to continue boot.

I’m not sure why this error is occuring or what I can do to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

I don’t know if the explanation would work here so I just try to make it simpler

  1. If you are using a custom board, then please get the corresponding image from the vendor for their board. NVIDIA sdkmanager and BSP by default only guarantees to work with NV devkit. The only situation that NVIDIA sdkmanager can work is if the vendor claims their board can work fine with custom board.

  2. What I saw here is just another usb device mode issue which is very common on custom board. This must have correct configuration based on hardware design to make it work. As neither you nor me is the board vendor, we don’t know the exact schematic in their design. Thus, you should report this issue to the vendor first.

Interesting. The guide I linked in my question was made by the vendor. So I guess I assumed that if it wasn’t working, it means that I missed something.

I’ll see If I can report this to the vendor then.

Where was the whole package that you ran initrd_flash coming from? Is it provided by the vendor? or you get it from NVIDIA website?

The vendor provided it on this repo: GitHub - forecr/dsboard_ornx_lan_orin_bsp: Jetson Orin NX & Orin Nano BSP Packages for DSBOARD-ORNX-LAN

Did this board ever get flashed with any of these package ? I mean other version of jetpack.

Yes, it was flashed with JetPack 5.1.1 previously. It is what currently runs on this board I’m trying to flash.

Could you try with jetpack6.0?

Somehow we managed to accidentally fry the recover usb port. So we’ll have to order replacement boards.

I will definitely try flashing jetpack6.0 once we get them though and let you know if it works.

Hey!! So I’m back!

I did try the same flashing process with JetPack6.0 and the same problem occurred.

jetson_orin_flash_logs.txt (83.1 KB)

Here are the debug logs again for attempting the 6.0 flash if that helps.

Situation is still same. Usb device mode has some issue. My comment is still same as the beginning.

For anyone looking for the solution to this, forecr updated their BSP files and released and updated flashing guide. It can be found here.
