GPU utilization always near 70% on Wayland when gaming

I am using a RTX 3070 with the 560.31.02 drivers on Gnome 46.4. When I run games on X11 the GPU utilization is always aroung 100% but when switching to Wayland the GPU utilization never reaches / gets close to 100% and always stays at around 70%. This happens on games running through Proton, for example Red Dead Redemption 2. This obviously impacts performance in a bad way. There is also no overheating that can cause the GPU to throttle.
I already tried:

  • Switching distros (Fedora, CachyOS)
  • Switching kernels (Stock kernel, CachyOS kernel)
  • Switching driver versions (550, 555, 560)
  • Switching desktop enviornments (KDE, Gnome)
  • Disabling / Enabling VRR
  • Disabling / Enabling VSync
  • Changing power profiles

Any help would be appreciated.

It’s probably because it’s using xwayland, with wayland native driver which will be released on Wine / Proton 10, that will be improved.

I have tested a version that has it, at least an old version of it, and the gpu usage was increased.
