How Can I Create a Custom Image to Flash a Jetson Nano?

Hello,

I want to create a custom “image” for the Jetson Nano that contains all the software I need for my project, as well as removing software I don’t need to preserve space on the SD card. For example, let’s say I want to use the latest version of OpenCV (4.7 as of this writing) and CUDA.

What I’d like to do is prepare an image that contains only the packages I require from apt, the CUDA toolkit, a pre-compiled version of OpenCV for ARM, along with any other software I need. From what I’ve read on the Dev Forums, it seems like I can accomplish this with a custom rootfs. But I’m not sure how exactly how to customize it. Is there a guide I missed? Further, it’s not clear to me how to pre-install a package from apt that I can flash the Nano with.

In conclusion, how can I create a custom flashable image I can safely use on multiple Jetsons without dd?

A possible solution is to develop the rootfs on one Jetson Nano, and then clone the image out. So that you can flash to the other Nanos with the image. Please take a look at

For Jetson Nano developer kit with sd card slot, please use this config jetson-nano-devkit.conf
And please let Jetson Nano enter recovery mode before running the command.

The Nano has the Power Select Header jumpered along with the FRC REC pin jumpered to GND.

We have checked and confirmed the above method does not work for Jetson Nano with SD card slot. Please try this method:

You can mount the SD card to Ubuntu host and run the command like:

$ sudo ROOTFS_DIR=_PATH_TO_ROOTFS ./jetson-disk-image-creator.sh -o sd-blob.img -b jetson-nano -r 300

Please set ROOTFS_DIR to the mounted SD card.

I’ll add that there are lots of ways to take an SD card you have the way you want it (e.g., updated, set up environment the way you want, added packages, so on) and use dd to save this as a clone. This could then easily be added on other SD cards (it would have the same accounts/passwords, updates, customizations, so on).

Thanks for providing this method. I mounted the microSD card and used this command to create an image from the Nano. I then copied the image into bootloader/system.img

Next, I executed this command:

sudo ./flash.sh -r -k APP jetson-nano-qspi-sd mmcblk0p1

It flashed the APP partition successfully, but the Nano gets stuck at the NVIDIA boot logo when plugged in to a monitor.

Then I tried this:

sudo ./flash.sh -r jetson-nano-qspi-sd  mmcblk0p1

But it still won’t boot past the NVIDIA logo.

I also had a USB to serial connector handy; here is the full log from the console (with no display attached):

Thank you again for the method, however, I was able to successfully flash the Nano with Etcher, and then resize the primary partition to the full size of the SD card with gnome-disk. Alternatively, one may be able to specify a blob size with the -s argument passed to create-jetson-nano-sd-card-image.sh. I haven’t tried this myself, but logically speaking it should work.

Here are the steps for those who are interested (I did it using a VM):

  1. Insert microSD card into laptop running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with SDK Manager installed.
  2. Mount it with mount <path-to-sd-card> /mnt
  3. Run sudo ROOTFS_DIR=/mnt ./jetson-disk-image-creator.sh -o sd-blob.img -b jetson-nano -r 300
  4. Copy sd-blob.img to the host machine.
  5. Install Etcher, format the target microSD card, and flash it to the target card.

Yes, account names and passwords would be cloned. So would any network setup which depends on a MAC address. There are ways to account for that, but it takes thinking about it. On the other hand, if you clone from the Jetson, then you have the very same problem. If a clone succeeds, then it is an exact duplicate of what you’d get from dd. I’ll suggest you might want to start a thread on “what needs to be accounted for when turning a clone into a production environment?”. This depends on the release version, but it is a slightly different perspective compared to cloning itself.

Note: If you never complete first boot account setup after a flash, then any clone will also not have that setup, and thus won’t copy account names and passwords. However, it is possible that any network MAC address dependent configuration could still be in place even if you never complete first boot account setup.
