nVidia a40 / VMware rendering performance

The goal is to set up a Blender rendering farm using Flamenco running on VMs in VMWare. I’ve got the host drivers and gpumanager loaded on each VMWare host. I’ve run Blender Benchmark on various guest machines using Windows and Linux and various Q profiles, from 8Q up to 48Q. The benchmark results are not very good - between 1500 and 1800 regardless of the profile. Blender’s web site shows the results for the A40-8Q as 3622, and the results for the 24Q and 48Q are pretty close to these. Not impressive, but much better than I’m seeing.

Has anyone worked with the A40 and VMWare VMs? I haven’t been able to find any configuration suggestions other than the ones to get nVidia grid drivers working.

Have you benchmarked the CPU only? It is possible that Blender benchmark isn’t using CUDA or OPTIX.

Yes. With CPU only the score for the monster scene is 32.9. So the benchmark program must be using CUDA or OPTIX. It just seems like we should be getting better performance.

Thanks.

That’s definitely a CPU range. Your results might be CUDA, while the averaged results on the OpenData page could be OPTIX heavy ranges. We used to separate those render results, but that option was removed. The OPTIX engine renders about 50%+ faster than the CUDA engine in Blender. Did you make sure Blender was compiled with the OPTIX drivers? Also what version of Blender are you using on the farm nodes?
