I am trying to setup a Jetson Orin nano with the official U22 server image following the instructions provided on the official page. However, I am unable to setup the device with the GPU drivers and cuda. Here is what I have tried so far:
- Download the boot firmware.
- the
rootfs of this is empty, so i download the respective sample root file system and unzip it inside the rootfs
sudo ./apply_binaries.sh
sudo ./tools/backup_restore/l4t_backup_restore.sh -r --raw-image \ jammy-preinstalled-server-arm64+tegra-jetson.img -e nvme0n1 \ jetson-orin-nano-devkit
The installation goes fine and i am able to use the Jetson. However, there are no nvidia gpu drivers and cuda installed, as in the Jetpack. What is the correct way of setting up the GPU drivers and cuda for this setup?
I have done some research and found that the ./apply_binaries.sh should set it up, but i cant find anything gpu related installed on the jetson. I have tried to install the drivers using the following:
sudo bash -c 'echo "deb https://repo.download.nvidia.com/jetson/common r36.3 main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nvidia-l4t-apt-source.list'
sudo bash -c 'echo "deb https://repo.download.nvidia.com/jetson/t234 r36.3 main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nvidia-l4t-apt-source.list'
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-l4t-core nvidia-l4t-cuda
This installs fine, however, i am still unable to use the GPU. I would kindly ask for assistance regarding what is the correct way of setting up the gpu and cuda for the official Ubuntu server image for jetson.

To set up the GPU drivers and CUDA on your Jetson Orin Nano with the official Ubuntu 22.04 server image, you’ll need to follow a different approach than what you’ve tried so far. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you achieve this:
Why your previous attempts didn’t work:
- The boot firmware you downloaded was empty, which is expected. The firmware is not responsible for installing GPU drivers or CUDA.
- You downloaded the sample root file system and unzipped it, which allowed you to use the Jetson, but it didn’t include the GPU drivers or CUDA.
- You tried to install the drivers using
sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver, but this command is not sufficient to install the GPU drivers and CUDA on a Jetson device.
Correct way to set up GPU drivers and CUDA:
To set up the GPU drivers and CUDA on your Jetson Orin Nano, you’ll need to use the JetPack SDK, which is a software development kit provided by NVIDIA for Jetson devices. Here are the steps:
- Install JetPack: Download the JetPack SDK from the official NVIDIA website. Make sure to select the correct version (JetPack 6.2) and the correct device (Jetson Orin Nano).
- Flash the device: Follow the instructions in the JetPack documentation to flash the device with the JetPack SDK. This will install the GPU drivers, CUDA, and other necessary software.
- Verify the installation: After flashing the device, verify that the GPU drivers and CUDA are installed correctly by running the following commands:
nvidia-smi (to check the GPU status)
nvcc --version (to check the CUDA version)
Comparison with your previous attempts:
- Unlike your previous attempts, using JetPack ensures that the GPU drivers and CUDA are installed correctly and optimized for your Jetson Orin Nano device.
- JetPack also provides a comprehensive development environment, including tools, libraries, and samples, to help you develop and deploy AI and computer vision applications on your Jetson device.
Additional tips:
- Make sure to follow the instructions in the JetPack documentation carefully to avoid any issues during the installation process.
- If you encounter any problems during the installation, you can refer to the NVIDIA forums or the JetPack documentation for troubleshooting guides.
By following these steps, you should be able to set up the GPU drivers and CUDA on your Jetson Orin Nano with the official Ubuntu 22.04 server image.

Hi,
Sorry that we don’t support the Ubuntu server image.
Please contact Canonical for further help.
Thanks.
Hi, thanks for the reply.
For reference, here is the link to the Ubuntu Image I am talking about: Install Ubuntu on NVIDIA Jetson | Ubuntu
Can you please provide further clarification regarding no support by Nvidia for this? Because the installation steps include downloading some important dependencies from Nvidia. And I thought it is a collaborative project supported by both Canonical and Nvidia.
Also, what would you recommend if I want to have a clean Ubuntu install on the Jetson without the GUI but with GPU drivers support and cuda?
Hi,
The image is maintained by the partner, so please contact Canonical for further support.
We only support the issue that using the Jetson Linux release:
Thanks.
