tx2 jetson crashed frequently

My newly bought tx2 board crashed frequently after install jetpack 3.3. I tried to install jetback 3.2, it has the same issue.
In the first run after the initial installation, it can run for a while. Now it keeps crashing at 2min into the booting process :(.
Can anyone help? Thanks.

If you can use a serial console you should be able to get a log to post here. See:
http://www.jetsonhacks.com/2017/03/24/serial-console-nvidia-jetson-tx2/

Otherwise there isn’t any information to go by…any detail you can provide would help.

I attache the kernel log. Thanks.

The directly pasted logs show normal other than stopping earlier than expected…but this might just be copy and paste issues. The actual attached log shows normal and indicates the system is running as expected. On the serial console do you still have the ability to interact after things seem to fail?

No I can’t interact with the system through serial con after it crashed

@linuxdev, I suspect that one of the reason for the crash has something to do with heat.

If we turn off the board keep it cool, then turn it on, it will run for about 2 hour or so before crashing. After that, if I turned it back on, it will crash immediately.

The problem is, I had check the CPU temperature it stayed constant at 36C. The fan is turned on through out.

Do you have any comment? What else I should do to diagnose this issue?

Heat issues would possibly stop even serial console, so this could be related. Is this not a dev kit? Is anything different about the fan? Is the fan running when things crash?

A very big advantage to serial console is that it typically runs longer than ssh or another method of connecting, even direct login. If serial console dies, then this is a clue, but you can still use a remote login to capture final moments since you know it runs normally until the end. So here are some suggestions on tests to run from the host PC (I would keep serial console running with “sudo dmesg --follow”, the rest can be from ssh)…

For the particular case of temperatures this should work until the moment of crash. You would probably need to add package “lm-sensors” (“sudo apt-get install lm-sensors”), but on that same terminal you could run:

watch -n 1 sensors

…the final value where the system works would be shown after crash.

Basically, anything remote displayed to your host PC should stay frozen at the final value. For example, ssh from host to Jetson would display a console terminal which would freeze at the final “good” screen. On your host you might run several ssh connections to the Jetson while it still works. Here are a suggested list of commands you might be interested in:

 • watch -n 1 sensors (requires "sudo apt-get install lm-sensors"...this will show changes to "sensors" once per second)
 • htop (requires "sudo apt-get install htop")
 • sudo dmesg --follow
 • ~ubuntu/tegrastats

Everything listed above, when run from the PC’s prompt, will have the ability of making copy and paste work on the host even after the Jetson crashes.

FYI, when you are creating a post, if you want to preserve formatting of a log or you want scroll bars added for longer content, highlight the text with the mouse and click the “</>” icon in the upper right of the new post editor…this turns it into “code”. You can click the “</>” ahead of time, and then paste your content between the two tags. Attaching also works.

I will try to capture other info. Meanwhile, this is the temps at the time of the crash collected through serial console
My board is devkit. The fan was running but stopped when it crashed. The temps did not change much through out the running period.

Temperatures can always make a difference, but it looks like those temperatures are easily within the acceptable range. If the fan stops at the time of crash, but temperature was ok, then I’d think it would get hotter after the crash if anything is still running (anything switching between 1 and 0 generates heat…it doesn’t matter if it is flawed and crashed).

Hopefully something will show up with whichever process is highest CPU usage (htop), or perhaps showing memory issues.

Note that a power line surge could also cause this, but it probably wouldn’t be so consistent.

This is all info I got when it crashed.

log_serial_console.txt (72.7 KB)

Temperatures were ok, RAM wasn’t being overly consumed, CPU wasn’t seeing much of a load. I would expect Compiz to be about where it is on an idle system. Serial console didn’t show anything particularly interesting, but there have been some issues with ethernet, and it looks like this showed up as the lockup occurred:

[ 57.808356] eqos 2490000.ether_qos eth0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow contx
[ 57.808356] eqos 2490000.ethe[ 57.817551] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): ey
r_qos eth0: Link is Up - 1Gbps/Full - flow control rx/tx
[ 57.817551] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready

Can you confirm the lockup started very close to the time this message came through? Can you run again and keep “dmesg --follow” running, and manually watch to see if the lockup occurs right after this message? If so, then we’ll have associated the problem with the ethernet.

Also, what USB devices are connected? Can you show the output of “lsusb -t” and “lsusb” prior to the crash? Your log shows normal content through approximately 9 seconds, and then skips up until about 57 seconds. Normally I would expect to see some USB activity notes at the point where yours stopped logging until the network eqos content. If you do have USB device attached other than simple keyboard/mouse (which don’t consume much power) you might try a powered USB HUB.

I reply on behalf of @robotdreamers

Jetson tx2 crashed frequently when I connected or not connected with ethernet, usb. I think that’s not a problem. Sometime I just provided power and do nothing, I don’t connect to any peripheral devices. But after a while (1 hour, 10 minutes, even immediately) TX2 is crashed without saving any logs in serial console. Then I tried to press and release power button, but nothing changed, jetson tx2 not booting up.
Do you have any comment?

The power button requires longer than most to shut down when the system is running. Mine requires about 8 seconds of holding the power button down.

I can’t see anything outside of the Jetson causing the problem, and software isn’t pointing out anything, so it might be time to consider RMA. Normally if hardware itself is not failing there would be some sort of message on serial console.

About the only other test I can think of is to see if the Jetson is working in its most simplified way by cloning (you might want a backup of the rootfs anyway, but it is time consuming). Clone doesn’t run a full operating system, tests reading eMMC, and is very reliable if the hardware is working. See:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1000105/jetson-tx2/tx2-cloning/

If clone fails part way into the clone using a non-VM host it is very likely to be a hardware failure.

If you are interested in RMA there is some information near the top of this:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/793798/embedded-systems/some-jetson-web-links/

Thank @linuxdevwhen i was running this command (sudo ./flash.sh -r -k APP -G backup.img jetson-tx2 mmcblk0p1), jetson tx2 crashed. This’s log in terminal. I think the problem is due to hardware failure.

log1.txt (68.3 KB)

then, I try again. while running that command, jetson tx2 is crashed.
log2.txt (213 KB)

The following assumes your host did not run out of disk space and that you are not using a VM. Check disk space via:

df -H /where/ever/the/clone/is/at

You may want to save the successful clone if you had anything you want, but it seems eMMC is marginal (a VM usually causes a similar failure…a non-VM should never see this). This should not have occurred in the first log:

write raw data fail - Success

Also we forgot to highlight that when we first opened the box and turned the board on, it did not turn on with pre-installed OS as promised.

But I don’t use a VM for jetpack, clone or anything, I just use Ubuntu 16.04.

I think the problem isn’t in clone process but in clone process, tx2 is crashed so it caused the error.

In this case I agree that the unit seems to be defective. eMMC read from a clone would normally be very reliable. Barring some obvious issues we already know are not causing a problem (e.g., we know it isn’t a VM and the host didn’t run out of disk space), I believe it is time to RMA. You can search for RMA near the top of this for some information:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/793798/embedded-systems/some-jetson-web-links/

Boards not having video are far different than boards not turning on…there are many issues with monitors not supported (e.g., all VGA monitors are unsupported, you must get lucky with a default mode). You’d need a serial console to see if turning on really failed (or perhaps something more obvious, like LEDs not going on). Under Windows the GUI mode is integrated, but under Linux you can essentially reboot just GUI while leaving the core system running (there are many annoying things in Windows needing full reboot to fix, but often under Linux subsets of the system can be restarted while leaving the core system uninterrupted). Lack of GUI mode video is usually not a reliable indicator of failure under Linux.

The original L4T release was far less reliable for video, so even if you had a valid monitor I’d say chances go up dramatically of video not configuring with that original release.
