Ubuntu 19.04 doesn't detect my HDMI display

Hi everyone,

I already spent hours on this problem, trying out everything I could find on different forums.
Any help will be greatly appreciated and I will be happy to provide any more information necessary.

Using Ubuntu 19.04, Nvidia drivers 430 (or any other version), the HDMI display is not detected. The hardware itself works as I have a dual boot with Windows that works in this configuration and also got it to work sometimes when using X.org Nouveau drivers. Switching back from Nouveau to Nvidia changes something in the configuration which makes even the Nouveau drivers not identify the HDMI anymore. I am sure it is something small in the configuration that I am missing.

I already tried setting options nvidia-drm modeset=0 in nvidia-kms.conf and running sudo update-initramfs -u.

Please delete the file
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
and reboot. It is a fixed config for intel-only usage.

Amazing, it works! Thank you… I don’t want to think how many hours I spent on this…

Is there any way to get the HDMI working while using the Intel card?
I can work with Nvidia but just thinking about the poor battery…

There’s not really a comfortable way as this would need to load the nouveau driver to drive the external display. So the nvidia gpu has to be powered anyway and power savings would be reduced.
Some newer notebooks have a second external display connector through USB-C which is driven by the intel gpu which might be an alternative.

jo.lanonse, please make sure the package nvidia-prime is installed
sudo apt install nvidia-prime
then switch to nvidia:
sudo prime-select nvidia
and reboot.

I have the same issue but, i dont see file “/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf” and I have nvidia-prime installed with nvidia set as prime.

Please suggest any other solution to it.

You have secure boot enabled so the driver doesn’t load since it isn’t signed. Please disable secure boot in bios.
