XNX could not boot from NVMe with L4T 32.6.1

I followed these instructions to flash L4T to a NVMe drive connected to my host, then installed the drive to my Xavier NX.

However, the board always boots to the SD card on power up. The U-Boot prompt doesn’t recognize commands like run bootcmd_nvme0 and saveenv. If I remove the SD card, the board fails to boot. It seems like the SSD is correctly identified, but the kernel has issues.

Here is the UART log:

[system reboots]

Step 10 is not needed for Xavier series chip because Xavier does not use uboot… It only has cboot.

Also, default boot priority puts NVMe higher than sd, so you don’t need to do anything for the priority.

Thanks for the note. I have a working JetPack installation on my SD card. When I put the SD card in, the system skips NVMe and boots directly from the SD card. I also logged in and verified that the rootfs is indeed the one on my SD card.

As you can see from the logs:

[0002.172] I> boot-dev-order :-
[0002.175] I> 1.sd
[0002.177] I> 2.usb
[0002.179] I> 3.nvme
[0002.181] I> 4.emmc
[0002.182] I> 5.net

Do I need to insert an empty SD card to boot from NVMe?

Edit: note that I’m running all this on the dev board on which the module has no eMMC. Would that make a difference?

Oh, sorry that I thought it was emmc board.

To change the boot order, you can follow this method.

That worked, thanks! Two final questions:

  • How can I persist this change?
  • Do I need a SD card plugged in for it to work?
  1. please refer to the

  1. If the NVMe is sure to get read, then no need sdcard.

Upon inspection I found that my SSD is missing these system partitions:

Model: SD SN64G (sd/mmc)
Disk /dev/mmcblk0: 63.9GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: gpt
Disk Flags:

Number Start End Size File system Name Flags
 2 1049kB 68.2MB 67.1MB kernel
 3 68.2MB 135MB 67.1MB kernel_b
 4 135MB 136MB 459kB kernel-dtb
 5 136MB 137MB 459kB kernel-dtb_b
 6 137MB 203MB 66.1MB recovery
 7 203MB 204MB 524kB recovery-dtb
 8 204MB 205MB 262kB kernel-bootctrl
 9 206MB 206MB 262kB kernel-bootctrl_b
10 207MB 311MB 105MB RECROOTFS
11 311MB 446MB 134MB UDA
 1 446MB 63.9GB 63.4GB ext4 APP // The only partition on SSD

I think this is why the system couldn’t boot with only SSD plugged in.

You can try initrd flash to flash to NVMe (https://docs.nvidia.com/jetson/l4t/index.html#page/Tegra%20Linux%20Driver%20Package%20Development%20Guide/flashing.html#wwpID0E0PI0HA). A convenient way to do that is using the script in this repo (GitHub - jetsonhacks/bootFromExternalStorage: Shell scripts to setup a NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier or Jetson Xavier NX Developer Kit to boot from external storage.).

Using this way, the NVMe will have all the necessary partitions. So you can use the NX without the SD card.
