XServer fails to start with proprietary driver on Quadro card

Hello,

I have a ThinkPad W540 with an Intel HD 4600 Graphics and a dedicated Quadro K2100m. The machine is running on linux (Fedora 22 Gnome Desktop), because I prefer linux for developing and because of the shell.

For a school project I need CUDA running, but when I install the NVIDIA drivers the Xserver refuses to start. (Xorg logs in appendix; I see that now the errors are different. They used to be “Could not find screens”)

But in the terminal (when switching with CTRL + ALT + 2) I am now able to run CUDA programs. As I am developing a Java programm that uses CUDA it would be nice though to have a graphical environment to be able to use Intellij.

I installed the 352.41 version of the driver. As soon as I removed the driver (and deleted my custom xorg.conf) the XServer is starting normal again.

On my gaming rig with a GTX 480 the same setup worked like a charm out of the box, so I suspect that the optimus constellation with the Quadro card to be the problem, because I tried similar setups on a T540p (which only difference is that it has a GT730m instead of the K2100m).

I would be fine in just turning off the Intel card as power is no problem. Another possible way would be to disable the NVIDIA card and just use it for CUDA. Anything is fine as long as I have GUI and can run CUDA. I already lost 3 full days to this problem and that with a graphics card that is especially made for “better driver support”. :(

I hope someone can help me with this issue.

  1. Get your laptop running the way you want with intel graphics. This doesn’t have anything to do with NVIDIA GPU, but make sure you have an xorg.conf that correctly selects the intel graphics, perhaps by specifying the PCI bus ID of the intel graphics in the xorg.conf file. The point is that you want the xorg.conf to identify the intel graphics and you don’t want any X auto-selection to be going on.
  2. Install the nvidia driver only, and specify the correct command line switch to not install the opengl libs (use --help on the installer command line to learn about command line switches). If prompted to modify the xorg.conf, select no. You can get the driver only by downloading an installer from www.nvidia.com for your NVIDIA GPU, or else by extracting the driver runfile installer from the cuda toolkit runfile installer, using a command line switch to do so on the cuda runfile installer command line (use --help to learn about command line switches available).
  3. Then install the remainder of CUDA using the runfile installer method, while selecting “no” if prompted to install the driver.

Depending on the current state of your laptop and the history of things you have done to it during previous attempts, it may be easiest/best if you start step 1 with a clean reload of the OS. Also note that there is no mention or use of the package manager/repo method of installing anything above.

I would strongly recommend you disable the nouveau driver according to the steps given in that manual, before installing the NVIDIA GPU driver. It’s not sufficient to just blacklist, you need to blacklist and remove the nouveau driver from the initrd image.

This method should put your laptop into a state where the GUI is working on the intel graphics, and the NVIDIA GPU is available for CUDA activities. CUDA/OpenGL interop and the associated sample codes will not work using this method.

Thank you very much. That solved my proglem.

Sorry for not mentioning the package manager. With Fedora 22 its dnf and I installed the driver using the runfile, because that method proved reliable the last few times, and nvidia drivers are not easily available via repos on all distros.

I did the following:

  1. create a file /etx/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-intel.conf

Note: I had already installed the CUDA toolkit before and there were no issues when changing drivers.

I almost had this solution once, except I have not used the option --no-opengl-files and I think I let nvidia mess around with the xconfig.

I still think it is strange that I had this issues with a Quadro card and never experienced such problems with the “cheap” consumer cards. Of course I know that Linux usually has better support for common hardware, but with Quadro cards you especially pay for that support.
