440 Driver giving me, "The NVIDIA GPU Not supported" message, yet Appendix A says it is.

I’m getting the following message when NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-440.44.run attempts to load the just-built module:

I attempted to roll back to an earlier version (390) and the driver would load but it would not support my 4k screen.

Any advice about how to move forward?

Yes, it does have a VGA port, so likely a fake? I admit I’m curious about what a fake means if it has the correct manufacturer/product code.

It’s an unlabeled, “generic” board i.e., doesn’t say who manufactured it supporting that it may be a fake. It’s manufacturer/product code is, 10de:1c82 and according to pci.ids that’s NVIDIA/GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, i.e., no clues there.

But, you’d think that with an 10de:1c82 id the driver would attach.

A fake is a re-branded older generation card that has had it’s bios reprogrammed to mimic a newer generation card.

Pascal cards never had VGA ports so it’s an indication your card is a re-branded femi generation hence it should run ok with the 390.xx nvidia driver.

A fair warning, those also won’t run stable with the 390 legacy driver since also the amount of memory is fake. Those are mostly reflashed GTS450 with 1GB but report 3GB so if an application allocates more than 1GB, the driver will crash.

Yes, the 390.xx driver does attach, but it doesn’t support a 4k monitor.

Looks like it’s time to get a real nvidia™ board.
