802.1X supplicant issues with Intel 8265NGW

Hi,

I’m using an Intel 8265NGW for WiFi on the Jetson Nano. It connects fine to my WiFi, but if I try to create a hotspot, it fails.

I have created a hotspot via the WiFi settings in Gnome, and when I start it, it times out and fails with: “Error: Connection activation failed: 802.1X supplicant took too long to authenticate”

My NetworkManager file for the network looks like this:

[connection]
id=SetupHotspot
uuid=32fb9eca-9db7-49c8-a9c7-11babc7e0cc1
type=wifi
autoconnect=false
permissions=

[wifi]
mac-address-blacklist=
mode=adhoc
ssid=testhotspot

[ipv4]
dns-search=
method=shared

[ipv6]
addr-gen-mode=stable-privacy
dns-search=
method=ignore

And I start it with nmcli con up SetupHotspot

The same network file works fine on my laptop running Ubuntu 18.04.

Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

I’ve tested the 8265NGW on Jetson Nano and Jetson Xavier, both with JetPack 4.2. Both fails.

On the TX2 that have its own wifi card it works perfectly, and instantly creates the hotspot. This is also running JetPack 4.2.

So it must be a driver issue.

Sorry for late reply. Could you share the full dmesg?

When the Nano boots, it connects to the WiFi router (this works fine). I then up the adhoc hotspot, after a while it fails with the previously mentioned timeout error message, and then it connects to the wifi router again.

No error from kernel side. We need to check the syslog. Please share it. Thanks.

Again, this exact configuration is working fine on the TX2. But on Nano and Xavier it’s not.

Still not gotten a solution for this.

I tried downloading the driver files for the module directly from Intel, but no change at all.

Below logs indicate the driver reject adhoc mode. Currently I don’t have the 8265NGW to verify. Will update it later.

Note: nl80211 driver interface is not designed to be used with ap_scan=2; this can result in connection failures

Hi,

so, for HotSpot mode, what is the best and most secure hardware solution?

Bethlis

Hi Wayne,

Have you had a chance to test the 8265NGW?

Hi,

May I know why you are using adhoc in your config? Do you want to use adhoc or ap mode?

Hi Wayne,

I want to use adhoc mode. I use it for headless setup of the units. When they power on the first time, they start a hotspot that a user can connect to. Here they can choose the WiFi network they want to have the Jetson connect to.

To the user, ap and adhoc looks the same. But there are a few problems when running in ap mode:

 1. You can’t scan for networks. So when you list available WiFi networks, you only see the hotspot.
 2. You can’t connect to another network directly. You have to disable the hotspot manually before that is possible (because it cannot see the SSID on the device because it can’t scan).

These are not problems in adhoc mode, where you can freely search for WiFi networks etc.

Again, this is working perfectly on the TX2. But Jetson Nano and Xavier with the 8265NGW is failing.

Hi,

Our developer has tried with the steps in below page and it works. Please verify it first on your side.
https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/AdHoc

Wayne, have you tried this on a clean JetPack 4.2 flash on SD Card?

First, it’s not possible to run the commands since wpa_supplicant and network-manager on JetPack 4.2 reserves the WiFi card. You’d have to disable those. So it’s not just running the commands from that guide.

Secondly, this does not expose a network other devices can connect to.

My requirements are simple:

 1. The Nano should expose a wireless network that I can connect to from my phone (i.e. it should show up in the WiFi list on the phone)
 2. I should be able to connect to the network from my phone
 3. While being connected to the network, the Nano should be able to scan for wireless networks available

This works on a TX2 + JetPack 4.2 with the configuration from my original post. The exact same configuration does NOT work on Nano or Xavier with the 8265NGW. So instead of trying workarounds that doesn’t solve it anyways, we should be looking into how to fix the WiFi functionality on the Nano/Xavier so that it actually works (because it doesn’t now).

Hi elias_mir,

I think we could firstly check the capability of the Intel card on your side with this setup.

The next step, if you need to wpa_supplicant/nm to enable adhoc, could you try to share the full steps that can work on TX2 but fail on Nano?

I wrote those in my original post:

$ sudo vi /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/SetupHotspot
[connection]
id=SetupHotspot
uuid=32fb9eca-9db7-49c8-a9c7-11babc7e0cc1
type=wifi
autoconnect=false
permissions=

[wifi]
mac-address-blacklist=
mode=adhoc
ssid=testhotspot

[ipv4]
dns-search=
method=shared

[ipv6]
addr-gen-mode=stable-privacy
dns-search=
method=ignore
sudo chown root:root /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/SetupHotspot
sudo chmod 600 /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/SetupHotspot
sudo service network-manager restart

# Activate the network:
sudo nmcli con up SetupHotspot

On TX2 (JetPack 4.2): Network successfully activated
On Nano (JetPack 4.2): Error: Connection activation failed: 802.1X supplicant took too long to authenticate
On Xavier (JetPack 4.2): Error: Connection activation failed: 802.1X supplicant took too long to authenticate

I’ve tried this in multiple Nanos and Xaviers with multiple batches of 8265NGW cards and antennas with no luck. It’s clearly a driver/software issue.

Hi elias_mir,

I think networkmanager + adhoc mode has some problems. We also reproduce this issue on our side.
But using ap mode seems feasible. Could you use ap mode first before we resolve the issue?

Hi Wayne,

It works on TX2, so it’s clearly not a networkmanager+adhoc issue, but rather driver/BSP issue.

Using ap mode is not optimal, because, as I said, it reserves the device for that. So you cannot scan for networks or connect to a network without first disconnecting the ap network.

While having ap running, try these commands:

sudo nmcli dev wifi rescan # this fails, as device is busy
sudo nmcli dev wifi # this fails to show wifi hotspots
sudo nmcli device wifi connect SSID password PASSWORD # this fails to connect, because it cannot see any wifi networks

Few observations, wpa_supplicant first tries changing the wlan0 interface mode while interface is running/up from station (mode = 2) to ad-hoc/ibss (mode = 1) which fails as intel upstream driver iwlwifi does not have change_virtual_inf method, this is mostly normal. After failing attempt, wpa_supplicant again tries to change the mode to adhoc after it downs the interface where it succeeds. Problem is when it tries to bring interface back up using SIOCSIFFLAGS ioctl complaining device or resource busy hence the issue. Difference with TX2 with respect to intel card is, it uses broadcom chipset and driver which has change_virtual_inf kernel driver method ultimately allowing to change the interface while its running. Please note, there is no clear indication that absence of that method in the intel driver is the cause of the issue. Probably have to file a upstream bug about this behaviour.

Note: wpa_supplicant is the backend NetworkManager or nmcli uses for the wifi.

Hi elias_mir,

Our developer finds the cause here and may help resolve the issue of creating adhoc mode.

Root cause: intel chipset 8265 like other chipsets have support for the certain combination of the simultaneous interfaces. This can be verified by the iw list command and valid interface combinations section of the command output as shown below:

* #{ managed } <= 1, #{ AP, P2P-client, P2P-GO } <= 1, #{ P2P-device } <= 1,
total <= 3, #channels <= 2

This basically means, IBSS can not co-exist with other interface types for this intel chipset and driver. wpa_supplicant by default during boot creates two interfaces, wlan0 which is of type managed and p2p-wlan0-dev which is of type p2p-device. When user tries to create ibss/adhoc interface using nmcli or NM GUI, wpa_supplicant downs the wlan0 managed interface and re-configures it to be of type adhoc, so far it is good. Problem is when it tries to up the interface, cfg and mac 80211 tries to pre-check valid combination of the interfaces for the given chipset and it fails as there is other interface of type p2p-device exist (p2p-wlan0-dev). There is a p2p_disabled flag in the wpa_supplicant.conf which can disable p2p device creations but it seems wpa_supplicant does not honour that flag (may be bug in the wpa_supplicant). So only solution is to compile and install wpa_supplicant without CONFIG_P2P option. Followed below steps to install and compile wpa_supplicant version 2.6.

All below commands are executed as a root.

1) Install below prerequisites (need internet connection for this):
apt install -y libnl-3-dev
apt install -y libssl-dev
apt install -y libdbus-1-dev
apt-get install libnl-genl-3-dev
apt-get install libncurses5-dev

2) systemctl stop wpa_supplicant

3) Take a back up of the wpa_* from /sbin directory

4) Follow steps to compile from (download package to Jetson platform)
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/8.1/basicnet/wpa_supplicant.html
#please follow till "Install WPA Supplicant by running the following commands:" section.

5) copy generated wpa_supplicant binary to /sbin directory

6) systemctl start wpa_supplicant

7) Follow NM GUI to create adhoc, specify either manual config or shared to other computer in IpV4 settings field in the GUI. It succeeds creating and joining the adhoc network.
