AGX Orin: The nvpmodel is set to MODE_30W, but the actual power consumption during testing cannot reach the maximum value of 30W, only around 15W

It is our custom made board, the model is AGX Orin 64GB, we setup the nvpmode to MODE_30W, and the cpu and gpu are full load, but the consumption is only 15W.

Why this happend? Or how can we achive 30W as we setup?

Hello,

Any update on this?

please test with this. It shall push the power to limit.

Hello @WayneWWW

I already tried that, as you can see above the cpu and gpu are all full load.

But it only reach ~15W while the power mode is MODE_30W.

How to calcute the consumption? It is VDD_GPU_SOC + VDD_CPU_VC or VDD_GPU_SOC + VDD_CPU_VC + VIN_SYS_5V0 + VDDQ_VDD2_1V8AO ?

From the documentation: Jetson Orin Nano Series, Jetson Orin NX Series and Jetson AGX Orin Series — NVIDIA Jetson Linux Developer Guide

How to calcutate the 30W consumption?

Is over-current log shown on your side?

We’ve tested that before and the power tool would push it over 30W easily. Thus, most likely you hit the OC situation on your side.

Use 50W mode could help clarify that.

Hello @WayneWWW

How to calcute the consumption?

It is VDD_GPU_SOC + VDD_CPU_VC or VDD_GPU_SOC + VDD_CPU_VC + VIN_SYS_5V0 + VDDQ_VDD2_1V8AO ?

This could answer.

Hello @WayneWWW

Thanks, so from the documentation, the full consumption shuld be:

VDD_GPU_SOC + VDD_CPU_VC + VIN_SYS_5V0 + VDDQ_VDD2_1V8AO, right ?

There are other contributors but those rails are the largest consumers of the 30W budget for the module.

Besides the overcurrent condition @WayneWWW mentioned, thermal could also cause throttling. This could be seen with the level of the THERM_ALERT_N pin.

Hello @ChrisB_NV @WayneWWW

We use the fan at maximum speed, so the temperature is not high to throttling.

Just another topic talk about the samilar issue.

From the topic, the Total module power = VDD_CPU_SOC + VDD_CPU_CV + VIN_SYS_5V0

But the test from our side is strange that, if we setup the MODE_30W above,

30W Total module power = 9.8W + 4.1W + 7.9W = 21.8W, can't reach 30W.

If we setup to MAXN,

Total module power = 47W + 13W + 10W = 70W, it exceed 60W, why this happend?

just want to clarify again. Did you see OC event triggered on your side when doing test in 30W test?

or you have no idea what I am asking here?

If I set the mode to MODE_30W, and setup the full load of cpu & gpu, i didnt see any OC event on kernel message and desktop notifications.

The mode is MODE_30W, but the consumption is only 23W, why can’t reach 30W?

I also checked with AGX Orin 64GB Devkit and have the same issues.

please check these nodes for confirmation.

@WayneWWW Checked on AGX Orin 64GB Devkit.

The command you provided is not work, so i use other noded.

Is this after running the stress test or you just boot up the device?

If you are sure above nodes do not give you any OC1~3 event counts after you run the test. It just means didn’t push enough of stress there and might need other user case (e.g. DLA/PVA/nvenc/nvdec).

Running some usecase of those might push it higher.

Also want to clarify that. It seems you have some wrong expectations to the power modes.

30W is just a maximum value of the power limit. The real point here is your usecase, but not why the power you pushed is not sufficient…

We can assure you with some proper tests there, it could achieve higher power consumption.

Yes, it is captured when running the stess test.

OK, got it . We confirmed that in MAXN mode it is easy to push the consumption to limit.

Maybe in 30W mode we need more extra load to push the consumption to 30W.

Thanks.
