Android on Jetson TK1

pulseaudio is no more concern for me since im running grinch kernel. Sound works normally after every reboot.

Me too. I would be totally satisfied if I could have dual boot.
Otherwise, my choice would be Android only, because of hardware acceleration and a very large app repo available yet and growing quickly, without recompiling issues.
Linux option is a great plus for the board, but I feel it should be a “plus” on ARM hw.
Anyway thanks to nvidia for the support and the L4T effort, and many many thanks to Peter Bauer and all of you guys in the forum/wiki for sharing your tips and experiences!

Made me laugh to tears:) Good for you

Actually Gotham(XBMC 13.2-3 )Packages | Arch Linux ARM is avaialbe for armv7 on Arch Linux which has Openmax support. It was one of the main reasons I was eager to switch from debian. I definately like Android and will be loading it on my Tk1 eventually… it all depends on the application…but for HTPC application…linux+ XBMC is much more reliable then android running XBMC. If you want to build a gaming console then android would make more sence.

I

Thank you. I hunt it down when i get home.

Because what some of us are developing for will end up as android consumer grade devices using the TK1. It seems silly we are having to port android over to a developer device for a SoC that is already being used in consumer devices with the same hardware running it. I just can’t see why it isn’t officially supported on the Jetson yet.

It would be nice to have some support on this effort. I could almost guarantee sales of the Jetson would rise if a working build of android was available for the device.

Edit

Also, just a bit of a FYI. The Shield tablet is unable to handle any load especially heavy gpu loads without quickly draining the battery. This happens even when on the charger. I don’t wish to be waiting around for my tablet to charge so I can work 2 hours till the tablet is drained again. This makes the Shield tablet a terrible device to work with these types of applications and development. The jetson doesn’t suffer from many issues a tiny tablet like the shield does and is worlds nicer to work with for my project.

android seams to have more compatible apps than Linux for Tegra, for example blender, it doesnt run on Linux for Tegra, it just crashes, im guessing android would be more compatible

I also would rather stay with ubuntu, if hardware video acceleration would work as it should. I bought the Jetson to be able to use it for normal day to day stuff, like browsing, email, office and as a HTPC, instead of my tower. you know, “go green” :)
It’s silly to have to use a Core i5 with a GeForce GTX750 Ti just for that.
btw, my home “server” (router/firewall/mail/calendar/lamp) is an Odroid U2, for the same reason, and does an excellent job for more than 1.5 years now.
I first tried an Odroid XU as a HTPC, but the guys at Hardkernel have even more problems with hardware acceleration :/

@spiteful Good point. L4T and Android should have been officially supported. Most Tegra products are targeted at Android after all.

I too agree with netphantm, I too wish to use the jetson for just browsing more often but even doing that ubuntu crashes, it just freezes with out warning

I very rarely experience that issue. I’m using chromium.

I think i can sum it up.

Most of us are developing some sort of infotainment device.

Except for the arch linux fork of xbmc, linux on arm doesn’t have a lot going for it in that area. There aren’t any steam games that work on arm. There’s not a strongly supported or used app store. Hardware acceleration isn’t working yet. The list continues.

If we had a working and supported way of installing android with Google play on the Jetson, we could spend our time developing the few missing features on android versus the huge list of missing features on Ubuntu.

How long was it after general availability before Santyago released grinch and the dtb that finally turned on the 7260, arguably the best WiFi card out there? 2 or 3 months? And he doesn’t even work for nVidia.

Sorry, I got a little ranty there, but i think most of us have been there lately.

Right. Even though ubuntu is great, I think android would be a much more compatible alternative. I mean, every other SBC like Jetson is, has official Android support (Radxa rock, mars board, odroid…). Why Jetson needs unofficial ports?

The way I see why Nvidia don’t bother supporting Android for Jetson, why put so much effort for minimal gain.
Nvidia wants to sell SoC chips, not boards.

Most of us here that wants Android support are unlikely make their own TK1 Based Device.

Those who are actually developing on the TK1 for Android have their own platform already.

While the TK1 SoC have long term availability, the Jetson isn’t.

Nvidia trying to do like most SoC vendors do to try to grab the general R&D market that doesn’t deal with 'n’tainment but want low power, low turn around, high performance, good potential to be smaller than the alternatives.

Like all of them, they help just enough to get Linux running with a vague hint that you can run other OS and then leave it to the community to help each other. (Or strangle ^^)

It doesnt matter if they support android or not. lucasdai will soon release android port and it looks promising so far

That what I mean, leave it to the community. :)

Hi Guys,

Now Jedroid preview image v1.0 has been released. Please follow the installing instructions here : http://jetson.co/wiki/main_page/android-on-jeston

Also ,let’s discuss the bugs and features here: http://jetson.co/forums/forum/jedroid-development and supported game&gamepad list here: http://jetson.co/forums/forum/jedroid-gamegamepad-support-list-collect

Enjoy!!! Rock!!!

Great !! :D
I’ll try to install it today.

Btw. Does dual boot work?

Ok, I installed it on 8gb sd card. It doesnt boot without sd card. has the flashing process erased internal emmc? If yes can I install it back and have dual boot with Android?

Bugs: Mouse pointer invisible randomly or when I connect something new to device.
RTL8188EU Wifi not working
only 720p resolution supported for now
Sound not working
Sometimes unstable
Browser crashes when trying to download anything

Otherwise very fast and smooth

Currently not usable

Hoping for a better image soon :D

I have flashed it on to the jetson, im typing from it now.
It has sound but it crashes when ever I try to download something too.
Does any one know how I could install anything on it?
