With the Sparks becoming more difficult to find, I’m considering the HP ZGX G1n Workstation. Does anyone have one? I see two versions of the 4 TB one: the CZ2V8UT#ABA and the D89GQUT#ABA, but I can’t figure out what the difference might be. At these prices I’d prefer to only get one with Gen5 SSD and not Gen4 speeds, but HP doesn’t seem to say at all. Does anyone know?
Pretty much the same as any OEM GB10.
I believe only the NVIDIA Spark has the Gen5 SSD, every other product is Gen4.
The only difference between the GB10s seems to be level of supplier support, SSD size, and cooling design. They are otherwise identical.
Well the ones from ASUS and MSI both clearly say Gen5, so it’s not only the NVIDIA version. I understand that they’re all otherwise the same. Really just looking for anyone that has the HP version and could provide info on Gen4/Gen5. HP doesn’t say on their site. A lot of the OEMs don’t say, which I guess probably mean it’s Gen4 or likely to possibly be Gen4 based on what they have at the time, but I don’t know.
Both my MSIs are Gen4 SSDs.
Well, what do you know, they were sold to me as Gen4s, but just checked that they are Gen5.

I’m running 2 Gigabyte AI Top Atoms - 4 TB Gen 5
When I was searching and making the decision for which GB10 to buy (before the massive price rises) I was trying to rationalise why the OEM brands were significantly cheaper than the Spark and as part of that research I found evidence that the OEMs were all Gen4, and I was happy to accept that as a saving because it wouldn’t really have affected inference performance for me.
I have to retract my statement, it seems a lot more of the OEMs are Gen5 than I thought. And I’m pleasantly surprised for find my 32GT/s PCIe :)
Some OEM’s do PCIe 5.0 on the US SKUs and PCIe 4.0 for the international models.
That could be a thing. I’ve noticed the ones that state Gen4 or Gen5 seem to say Gen4 for the 1TB and 2TB ones and Gen5 for the 4TB ones. Gigabyte seems to state which it is too. Acer, Dell, HP, and Lenovo seem to omit the details.
That’s really nice. I’ve also seen more people saying they checked theirs that were supposed to be Gen4 and were surprised to find Gen5. Sort of confusing since you’d think Gen4 would be cheaper and more available but I don’t know.
Gigabyte now has 5G nvme. Like 1000$ more expensive than gen4 4T
I was able to find this weird URL where HP has a PDF about them. It doesn’t list model numbers but it seems to show they only have Gen4. It’d be nice if anyone has an HP ZGX G1n and can confirm, since maybe they’re also using Gen5 and not saying.
For what it’s worth, I bought a Veriton GN100 at the very end of the recent promotions (from Target of all places, but actually direct from the manufacturer through Target’s storefront). The SSD generation was not specified. Common wisdom and all reports I’d seen said it would be a slow Gen 4.
It’s a Gen5. It’s actually the identical part number Samsung to my DGX Spark.
Clearly they sold a bunch with Gen4 drives, and some listings delineate between them. Maybe I just got lucky.
I have a HP ZGX G1N and was probably one of the first ones to swap out the factory drive and replace it with the 4TB Corsair MP700 Micro.
The factory 1TB drive was a Phison PCIe Gen 4 x4 drive:

This seems to be the same drive that came on the ASUS Ascent GX10 1TB models, according to this ServeTheHome article..
Maybe only the high-end 4TB models are using Gen 5 drives?
Yeah that’s a good possibility since the OEMs that do list Gen4 or Gen5 only seem to offer Gen5 on 4TB models. Thanks for the data point. Now I’m wondering since the drives in the Sparks are SED (self-encrypting) I wonder if they also have power loss protection (PLP)? I tried looking up the drive models mentioned here but can’t find anything. Apparently there’s often not much official info on drives that come installed in computers…
Now I’m wondering if yours is a 4TB model and that might be why you got the Gen5 whereas a 1TB or 2TB model might have been Gen4.
