Can't see TX2 flash usb port using Mac Laptop

I am using a MacBook Pro (mid 2009) as my host and have it booting up with Ubuntu 16.04. That is I’m not using VM at all.

I was able to download the NVIDA SDK installer and install the files on my Mac. But when I actually try to flash the installer fails when trying to connect to the board. When I view the output of lsusb on the Mac I do not see an NVIDA device. The cable is connected as required.

Maybe this is a quirk of the Mac book hardware. The usb ports on the mac do work for other devices like a SansDisk usb and mouse. But it doesn’t see the TX2.

Below is the ouptut of dmesg from the TX2. Is there any indication of a usb port problem on the TX2?

Maybe the flash succeeded but post-install (installing packages) fails because of wifi.
I’d suggest to connect a HDMI monitor and USB keyboard and mouse and reboot TX2, log in and go to network manager to disable wifi, be sure to have wired ethernet instead (unplug also the USB link), then relaunch post-install only with SDK manager.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, disabling the WIFI did not help. The problem is Ubuntu on my Mac Laptop is not recognizing the TX2 as a device on the Mac USB port I have plugged the cable into. There are two usb connectors on the mac and I have this problem regardless of which port I connect to.

When I run the SDK Manager and get to step three (setup process) and it asks me to make sure the cable is connected and Jetson Ubuntu OS is running - both are true.

I enter the username and password and click Flash and a message appears immediately:

Could not connect to target devices. Verify that
1) The device is connected to the host via USB cable. (it is I am using a male to male USB
cable plugged into the microusb to female usb cable supplied with the kit. The latter is
of course inserted to the micro usb plug on the Jetson.)
2) Unbutu System configuration wizard is complete on the device (I assume it is, but not
clear on how to confirm this)
3) Jeston’s Ubuntu OS is up and running (again this is true and I do have an HDMI display
connected along with keyboard and mouse so I can verify it is running)

So my specific questions are:

  1) How do I know if the system configuration wizard completed?
  2) Do I need to install a special usb driver on the Ubuntu running on my Mac
  3) Is there anyway to test the usb port on the Jetson to make sure it is functioning.

FYI, recognizing the TX2 on USB is only during flash with the Jetson in recovery mode, and this doesn’t apply to package additions. After a flash the Jetson is rebooted before package steps run. While installing packages an IP address is needed, and it wouldn’t be possible for USB to see the recovery mode TX2.

However, there are multiple options for networking, you might want to describe how the ethernet is wired, e.g., are both the host and TX2 connected to the same router? Are the two connected directly together instead of via a router? Are you depending on ethernet over USB?

At this point my host is connected to the internet using a wireless connection. The TX2 is connected directly to a router that connects to a DSL modem (I live in the boonies).

I tried the SDK Manager again and using it in offline mode since I’ve already downloaded all the files. When I get to step three I tried using manual mode which instructs me how to put the TX2 in forced recovery mode. I did that checked using lsusb and still no sign of an NVIDIA device. Sure enough when I click flash it tells me that it could not connect to the target device. I’m confident I did get the board into forced recovery mode. I’m suspicious of my MACs ability to do its part.

At this point, I’m tempted to try another computer for my host. Or ultimately, my goal is to do development and testing with the TX2. I have made a copy of the eMMC to a 250MB Samsung SSD and can get the TX2 to boot off off the SSD - no problem. Just not sure how to get the SDK packages installed for this case.

Thank you all for the assistance.
David

Does the host PC have connection to the TX2 via the same DSL modem? Can the host PC ping the TX2?

FYI, it is ok for the host PC to use WiFi, and the wired between TX2 and modem should be ok.

If the TX2 is in recovery mode and the micro-B USB cable is connected to the host, what do you see from “lsusb -d 0955:”? The “0955:” is any NVIDIA USB product. A TX2 is specifically “0955:7c18” (the TX2i and other Jetsons would vary).

Only flash uses USB. Packages are added over ethernet, and if lsusb shows the Jetson, then it won’t be able to install packages. The confusing part is that normally there would be a flash step, and during the step Linux is installed…and then reboots and communications reverts to ethernet. The new SDK Manager may have quirks, I have had only limited interaction with this so far (I’m working on getting Ubuntu 18.04 on my old dual Atom laptop), and it may be that an error message about detecting the Jetson isn’t quite what it seems to be.

Have you flashed and now want packages? Or are you also wanting to flash?

EDIT: There is a wired ethernet emulation option over USB, but it is still wired ethernet. Which networking option did you choose?

So doing lsusb -d 0955: while in forced recovery mode displayed nothing.

I am able to ping the Jetson TX2 from my host (MAC laptop).

Not sure about choosing a networking option. The SDK manager does not ask me to choose a network option. It only ask me to choose the device type (Jetson TX2). Am I missing something? I’ll look at more forum entries and see if I can find out if there are any problems with the SDK manager.

So at this point, I have not been able to flash at all.

Sounds like I my next step a new host. I have a Lenovo machine that is no longer used. I’ll try that out. I hope I have not damaged the USB port somehow. I did have a microusb to usb cable I tried using first and when that didn’t work I used the cable provided in the kit which requires a male usb to male usb cable that I had to purchase from Best Buy. Seems like it would be difficult to mess up a USB port. So I’m hopeful that is not the problem.

Thanks again,
David

The micro-B USB cable supplied with the TX2 is highly recommended. No adapter should be needed if the Mac has a type-A connector. There are many OTG style charging cables which tend to have bad quality (manufacturers seem to assume it is only for charging). Unless the recovery mode Jetson shows up in lsusb there is no chance of flashing. SDK Manager cannot proceed with flash steps if this is missing.

Extra package addition without recovery mode is not a problem for this, and in fact a recovery mode Jetson can’t run basic package install. Until you reach this step it may be that you won’t be asked about network options.

It is possible for the Jetson itself to go bad with hardware failure, but loss of recovery mode in lsusb rather rare. Broken micro-OTG connectors are somewhat common, but mostly they break off completely instead of going bad while still attached.

Not sure about the SDK Manager options…I’m still exploring that myself (I just got a laptop reinstalled with Ubuntu 18.04 but won’t be able to get to it till this weekend). I can say definitively though that without lsusb showing the device flash cannot succeed. Most likely there is some odd USB issue on the Mac with Ubuntu.

Just to update, I did get unbutu setup on my old Lenovo ThinkCenter computer, was able to download the SDK Manager and all the flash and packages stuff. But when I try to flash the board the SDK manager immediately reports it can’t connect to the Jetson.

Something I found out interesting, is the USB device that shows up when I connect the TX2 to my computer and in force boot mode is not NVIDIA but Ours Technology Inc. with a device id of 0ea0:2209. I ordered my TX2 from amazon, so maybe its an older version. The number of the Jetson PCB is ‘945-82771-0000-000 AM’.

No Jetson should ever respond with a manufacturer ID other than “0955:”. The full manufacturer ID plus product ID for a regular TX2 should always be “0955:7c18”. There are variations of the Tx2 which would change the “:7c18”, but are you sure the “0ea0:2209” is the Jetson?

In the USB registry manufacturer ID “0ea0” is “Ours Technology, Inc.”. Product ID “2209” for that manufacturer is not listed for the database I looked at, but I do see they have a USB drive with a similar name which could be mixed up (apparently they have a USB drive called a “JetFlash”).

To list all NVIDIA USB devices:

lsusb -d 0955:

Even if you did have a custom device with that other ID there is no way the flash software could identify that device and be used for flash…in that case there would be custom software from the vendor.
