USB not working

Hi,

I just flashed the board with R28.1. After booting, on of USB ports stopped working.

Did anyone have the same problem? How can I fix it?

Can you post a copy of “dmesg” after a fresh boot? I’m assuming you can use ssh or serial console if USB keyboard is failing.

Also, does your keyboard have any lights which function when you toggle caps lock or num lock?

I don’t have a proper boot log yet (something I’ll do this weekend), so I’m not positive about what I see in the logs. I do see this, which might or might not be an issue:

…it could be it is intended to fall back.

Later on I also see a keyboard detected and correctly assigned as a human interface device…this would not be possible if the physical hardware had not at least queried the device and found a driver to claim it. A HUB is mentioned, but this could be part of the keyboard itself. Do you use an external HUB? If so, try plugging the keyboard directly into the Jetson, or perhaps use a powered HUB (keyboards would not require external power, they use so little…but it is a good debug test).

I connect the devices directly into Jetson. I tried both with the mouse and the keyboard. Both of them work properly in upper USB slot, and both of them don’t work in the lower one.

I’m not sure which is “upper” or “lower”. I have been assuming this is the developer carrier board, correct me if this is wrong. The developer carrier board has a full-sized USB type-A connector, plus a micro-OTG USB connector. The controller/lane mappings differ in configuring these two ports, so if one of those ports could be identified it would be a good debugging clue.

FYI, I have placed a USB1 mouse on both ports of a TX2 under R28.1 (should be the same as this release on TX1…not necessarily since the two use different driver packages during flash…haven’t flashed my TX1 yet), and both ports work. Have you tried any faster peripherals on the two ports (USB2)? If a USB2 device works on the port, then this is an indication of a software problem, whereas missing functionality of this as well might show a hardware problem.

If this is the micro-USB connector, then you cannot use the provided cable for connecting anything to the Jetson…this cable is for recovery mode only (the Jetson becomes a device in recovery mode). A micro-A connector must be used on this port for peripherals such as a keyboard or mouse. Usually (not always) there is an “A” or “B” visible at the connector to identify which standard it follows.

It has two USB type A connectors, placed one over the other.

The problem with USB started after flashing the board with R28.1. Before both the mouse and the keyboard worked properly.

There’s the issue…for a J120 board you need different device tree settings. You’ll need to use the BSP for the J120. It should work after you load the right software, but Auvideo will need to provide that update.

If I cannot, where can I find rigth software. If I use Jetpack 3.1 will it load right software after the update is provided?

Device trees are easy to modify, but the values to use and which part to edit is not something I can guess at…the J120 support people would know what to change. Regardless of which JetPack version you use the device tree/BSP will differ between a developer carrier board and any board with a different layout. It depends on which module pin was wired to what connector or device on the carrier board.

Just for information, there are settings for hardware which need to be in place before a driver can use that hardware. For one example, GPIO might be used with a custom device…but if there are multiple GPIO pins, and if the device can be attached to any of those pins, then something has to set up the right pin to where the driver expects it; other settings like clock speed or rail voltage might also need setup to be compatible with some outside hardware. The device tree does this. Device tree has options as to where it can be set up. Typically U-Boot does this to some degree, and then you can load a dtb file from “/boot” as well (the “FDT” key/value pair in extlinux.conf).

Very likely Auvidia will release a file which can simply be copied in place in “/boot”. There may be other changes as well, but this part is the device tree. Under R28.1 the method of setup has changed somewhat, and you will need Auvidia to tell you what changes are required for R28.1. If you need to edit or modify the device tree by hand it is fairly simple, but you’ll need the information from them before it is known what has to be done.
