CPU Spec Question. 2xM10 CAD Build.

Hi Guys,

We are in the process of building our 2xK10 based servers for use with Citrix VDI.
We are aiming for 45 Autocad/Revit/Photoshop users per server and have finalized everything apart from our processors.

Currently we are using 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2650 v4 2.2GHz, 30M Cache, 12 cores / 24 threads.

However we have read that this may not be ideal for Autodesk products. A few old posts on this forum have recommended faster clock speed at the cost of cores and then over-subscribing the resources for user density. And we are having trouble finding any information for a recommended spec or even solid documentation on performance.
Last thing we want is to put in a fully bombed system and find out our CPU is the bottleneck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you need any more information.

Hi Spencer,

you’re right. I would strongly recommend to use CPUs with high clock frequency >3GHz. Please try to consider the 10core 3GHz CPU for example. It makes more sense to oversubscribe (until a specific level) instead of using more cores as these applications are single threaded and benefit of high clock speed.

Another quick question.

Is there any difference between the M10-1B profile and the M10-1Q?
Everything I see they are identical other than linux support for the Q.

Any reason to pay for workstation licences if you dont need the other gpu profiles?

Hi Spencer,

the difference is the driver. For 1B you’re using the “normal” NV driver (comparable to Geforce) and with 1Q you get the Quadro driver with all the benefits for 3D Pro apps like app certification, performance optimisation and others. So it depends on the use case if it makes sense to use 1B (intended for office VDI) or 1Q (intended for 3D pro apps). There is an app catalog: https://www.nvidia.com/content/gpu-applications/PDF/gpu-applications-catalog.pdf that shows which applications will benefit directly from Quadro driver.
