I have tried updating my system and updating the kernel (running: 4.6.0-kali1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.6.4-1kali1 (2016-07-21) x86_64 GNU/Linux ).

Also, just in case this is pertinent, I am running a dual-booted system with both Windows 10 and Kali.

Many thanks in advance.

You need to install the sources for that kernel in order to build the driver. Please consult the Kali Linux documentation on where to find that and how to install it.

Added the sources, installed, and rebooted. The drivers install, but now it crashes on startup. Only way I can access the system is through recovery-mode,where I have full terminal access.

Since you tell nothing usefull, i would oracle, you use an optimus laptop.
