Gsync screen of the Alienware M18 R2 is not detected

hi,

the Gsync screen of the Alienware M18 R2 is not detected, I have the latest drivers 550.54.14.

Please run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root and attach the resulting nvidia-bug-report.log.gz file to your post.

Hi,

nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (528.2 KB)

G-Sync compatible is detected by the driver but disabled:
[ 26.274454] nvidia-modeset: WARNING: GPU:0: BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd (DP-0): G-SYNC Compatible: EDID min refresh rate invalid, disabling G-SYNC Compatible.
Don’t really know why, the decoded EDID looks fine:

IDK too, i try Fedora, Arch… Same bug. Maybe someone know a workaround ?

When my computer start : [ 1875.586129] nvidia-modeset : WARNING: GPU:0: BOE Technologie Group Co., Ltd (DP-0): G-SYNC Compatible: EDID min refresh rate invalid, disabling G-SYNC Compatible.

I wonder if this is related to this recent issue?

All I can say is that I’ve tested several drivers, 535, 545, and 550. I’ve also tried several distributions, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, and it doesn’t seem to work. In light of my tests, I don’t think it’s due to a recent issue, I believe this PC has never been properly supported.

I wonder whether this changes when disabling Advanced Optimus in BIOS for this laptop?

No. Optimus or Nvidia Only it’s the same

nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (809.2 KB)

Nvidia driver: 555.58.02. G-Sync is always broken with my 4090 mobile. I have tested multiple distros on both Wayland and X11.

I have the same problem on my Alienware m16 R1 4090 mobile. Have tried multiple drivers including the latest 555.58.02. Not working in Wayland or X11.

drm_info shows both “vrr_capable” = 0 and “VRR_ENABLED” = 0 and X Server Settings shows: G-SYNC Mode Available: None and G-SYNC Mode Enabled: No

I’m thinking perhaps the EDID is not being parsed correctly by the driver? In Windows the display is correctly detected as “G-Sync Capable”.

EDID and bug report attached.

I came across a similar issue with a different laptop that was due to the EDID not reporting VRR in both blocks. Looking at delor.vd’s EDID and mine, it seems to be the same problem I think?

UPDATE:

The 560 beta driver appears to have resolved this for me in both Wayland and X11. I haven’t had a chance to fully test just yet, but at least it’s detecting the display as G-Sync/VRR capable now.

A heartfelt thank you to the driver team, this was the last hurdle before making the switch to Linux full-time!

The 560 beta drivers fix my issue with Gsync.
