How is the NVAPI ID determined?

I didn’t find any information in the documentation on how the NVAPI ID of GPUs is determined, maybe I just didn’t look at the right places though.

I saw IDs with 3 or 4 digits on different systems, but I couldn’t figure out to what those numbers relate.

Does anyone know how they are computed? Does it encode some information like PCI bus or other?

I’d appreciate any helpful hints.
