HP OMEN 16 (RTX 5060) battery drains after shutdown on Linux - GPS ACPI DSM bug

Hardware: HP OMEN 16-ap0493ng
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Mobile
Driver: 580.126.09 (Open Kernel Module)
OS: Debian 13 (Kernel 6.12.74)
BIOS: F.11 (latest available)

Problem:
After shutdown from Linux, the laptop stays warm and drains
the battery completely. This does not happen when shutting
down from Windows.

dmesg shows:
NVRM: testIfDsmSubFunctionEnabled: GPS ACPI DSM called before
_acpiDsmSupportedFuncCacheInit subfunction = 11.

Also: ACPI PM only supports S0 S4 S5 (no S3).

Other users with same hardware report identical issue:

  • HP OMEN 16 with RTX 5060 + Linux Mint 22.3
  • HP OMEN 16 with RTX 5060 + Ubuntu 22.04

After the notebook is shut down, it does not reach a true powered-off state. The
discrete GPU power rail remains energised. As a result the machine:

  1. Stays hot after shutdown and becomes dangerously warm when placed in a
    closed bag — a burn/fire and battery-safety concern.
  2. Drains the battery while “off” — measured at roughly 15–19 W during a
period when the system was fully shut down (confirmed via the OS logs reaching
the power-off state with no subsequent boot). A correctly powered-off notebook
    draws well under 1 W.
  3. On several occasions the machine would not power on again for some time
after this, consistent with an over-temperature / power lock-out that only
clears after the residual charge drains and the unit cools.

Requesting HP & NVidia to fix this issue with the BIOS or driver update or whatever necessary to make this work on Linux. Everyone is experiencing this issue.

I have the same issue with a omen 16-ap0056nf on fedora 44 !

Hi, I released v2.2.0 of the OMEN ACPI Toolkit:

It targets CachyOS with mkinitcpio and Limine and creates separate experimental entries without flashing the firmware or modifying the stock entry:

  • S5-only: shutdown correction, recommended first;

  • Combined: the same correction plus bounded WQBZ loops for AE_AML_BUFFER_LIMIT.

The reference path is unchanged from v2.1.11, tested on an HP OMEN MAX 16-ap0006sl with board 8E35, BIOS F.13, RTX 5070 Mobile, kernel 7.1.5-1-cachyos and NVIDIA Open Kernel Module 610.43.03.

Other machines can explicitly opt in, but compatibility is not guaranteed and all structural checks remain mandatory. Keep the stock entry and start with S5-only.

If anyone tests it on a similar OMEN, please reply here or open a GitHub issue with the exact model, board, BIOS, GPU and result.

Tested the S5-only change on another unit, works:

  • model 16-ap0004, board 8E35, BIOS F.11
  • RTX 5070 Laptop, NVIDIA open 595.99, hybrid mode
  • Ubuntu 26.04, kernel 7.0.0-38, GRUB
  • DSDT OEM rev 0x01072009, same as the F.13 one, anchors matched unchanged

Result: ~21 W while off and warm before, ~1 W after (1h test). Combined not tested.

I didn’t use the toolkit itself since it’s CachyOS/Limine only, I applied the same _PTS(5) change and loaded it through GRUB. Ubuntu version here if useful: GitHub - Adiakys/omen16-s5-fix: Fix battery drain after shutdown on HP OMEN 16-ap0xxx (8E35) under Linux – Ubuntu/GRUB · GitHub

Opening a GitHub issue with the details too.
