Jetson Nano booting time

Hello,

I am using the Jetson Nano dev kit with a 16GB SD card and I successfully flashed the SD card using the SDK Manager under Ubuntu 18.04 using latest Jetpack.
Everything works fine but I am a bit concerned about the booting time. It takes me about 2-3 minutes before doing the Ubuntu desktop on my Nano. Is that normal?

First, I am seeing the Nvidia logo and then I see log on screen that says the board setup failed, like shown in this thread.

After, I can see the nVidia logo and then black screen for a couple of seconds until I see the desktop.

Is there any way to decrease the booting time?

About 20 seconds is lost recovering a filesystem which was not shut down correctly. When the ext4 journal has so many errors that it cannot simply replay the journal to avoid fsck.ext4, then the fsck takes significant time. Even worse, orphan inodes mean loss of part of a filesystem, and mostly you cannot predict what was lost (and there is no way to know how this will affect the boot on the next boot). Is the system being shut down correctly, or is power simply being lost?

Is there a way to ensure that the SD card or eMMC does not get corrupted while we have power removal?
Besides the 20 seconds recovering the filesystem, why it is taking so long to boot?

Any time you see “orphan nodes deleted” you have lost part of your filesystem. The damage could be from anywhere, although it is most likely to be from recently written content. I honestly believe that if you want to continue testing, then you need to flash the system again since you have no way to know what part of your system is missing.

Journals in a filesystem can only do so much. I’ve never done it, but I suppose it is possible to tune for a larger journal. This would not prevent data loss, but it would guarantee the loss is only the most recently written data. Correct shutdown would really be the best solution.

I have not heard if it finally worked, but some others have commented on using OverlayFS. This is essentially booting to a read-only filesystem which will never be harmed by sudden loss of power, but then another filesystem runs on top of this. The filesystem on top of this is what more or less handles the “difference” between original and new content. New content can still be lost, but you would know that the base operating system itself is always correct. The trick with this is the need to customize the initial ramdisk (initrd), and I am uncertain of what those customizations would be (the kernel would need to be customized in both the booted system and the initrd, but there would also be other changes to the initrd and I am not certain of what those changes would be).

There is a lot going on (which is normal) to boot a full operating system. Here is an example of a “normal” operation taking extra time:

What you see there is about 7 seconds where the ethernet is obtaining an address from the DHCP server (router). If you need to cooperate with the local network, then speeding this up is a matter of getting the DHCP server/router to reply faster (which is out of the control of the Jetson). If you know ahead of time that you can operate with one specific static address, then you could avoid the DHCP query entirely and use a static IP address.

Here you will find about 5 seconds used to start the GPU in graphical mode:

…if you don’t have a monitor, then you could set it up headless and skip that time.

Here is time setting up bluetooth, and only after this completes does USB start running, taking a total time of around 13 seconds:

Do you need bluetooth? Do you need the GUI monitor? Does your ethernet need to adapt to different networks using dynamic DHCP requests? There would still be significant boot time, but if you removed all of those, then the boot speed would be significantly faster.

NOTE: Technically, you could run your filesystem in synchronous mode (instead of buffered). However, the life of your eMMC or SD card would go down dramatically and fail. Prior to fail the performance would drop to the extreme.

I agree we may decrease loading time by removing some non necessary functionalities.

However, I am concerned about the time between 80s and 150s (2min:30s) before I get desktop and be up and running. This time is not logged in kernel boot log.

Is it normal to get loading time of about 2-3 mins with current image you provide.

I suppose it is possible to customize the image you provide in order to remove unnecessary software to be loaded. We are only interested with gstreamer and video hardware acceleration.

The log stops at 80 sec, so I do not know about the time from there to 150 sec. However, the last line I see is the display controller. I believe this is the display blanking after initial start (from power savings if you don’t log in to the terminal in some amount of time). Are you logging in to the GUI?

You might want to show your X11 log. If you run “ls -ltr /var/log/Xorg.*”, then the last file is the most recently written one. This should be “Xorg.0.log”. You could save a copy of this, renamed with a “.txt” name, and then attach it to the forum. If you hover your mouse over the quote icon in the upper right of one of your existing posts, then other icons will show up; the paper clip icon will allow attaching the file. This file will contain timestamps and other information from the booting of the GUI.

Someone else may know of ways to run your gstreamer directly without Xorg (which would probably save some time, but also have a learning curve).
