Jetson Orin Nano can’t connect to phone hotspot (no Wi‑Fi at facility)

Hi all,

I’m using a Jetson Orin Nano (8GB, dev kit) and ran into an issue trying to get internet via my phone’s hotspot at a facility with no Wi‑Fi.

  • Phone: [Android/iOS + model]
  • Hotspot band: [2.4 GHz / 5 GHz / “Auto” if you’re not sure]
  • Jetson OS: [JetPack version / Ubuntu version]
  • Network manager: stock GUI (nm‑applet) / nmcli

Symptoms:

  • The Jetson sees other Wi‑Fi networks normally when available.
  • When I enable the phone hotspot, it either:
    • doesn’t show up in the list, or
    • shows up but fails to connect (“failed to activate connection” / password prompt loops).

Things I’ve tried:

  • Toggling hotspot OFF/ON on the phone

Questions:

  1. Are there known issues with Jetson Wi‑Fi modules and phone hotspots (especially [your phone OS/band])?
  2. Is there a recommended way to force the Jetson to use 2.4 GHz only or specific security settings that work best with hotspots?
  3. Any logs/commands you recommend (e.g., nmcli, dmesg, journalctl) to diagnose this?

Thanks,
Mustafa

Looks like WPA3 is not enabled by default. Please try the command and see if it works:
